SS Laughter Hack was formed in 1986 as the failure of a couple art-school geeks to play nice. Their inability to refrain from throwing axes at the wall, blasting Black Flag and Husker Du & smoking unfiltered butts led to getting "voted out" of their adjacent studios by the more pastoral, contemplative artiste. Such activities seemed to lend themselves better to starting a band or ending up in adult-juvi, hence the alchemy and painful inception of early Slaughter Shack. The two maladroits then had to enlist (i.e. drug & kidnap) band members to fulfill their vengeful fantasy. The first incarnation of The Shack was three chicks (Ellen M: drums, Deb Scott: guitar and bass & Dana Ong: bass &guitar) and two dudes (Colin Burns: screaming & George: hitting things). Their instruments were suit cases for drums, trash can lids with pick-up mics (that could take your eardrums out a block away), a mistuned mustang bass, a slide guitar and a screaming banshee boy that weighed 25 pounds wet and contorted himself while summoning the anger of Satan from his vocal chords. Naturally while opening for indie rock acts like The Pixies they found that like in the art school days they werent quite fitting in. (Maybe the dead fish Deb wore between her legs with the meat bikini may have been a little too harsh). SO off they went again to find their own. With the alliance of bands like The Five, Hullabaloo & Black Cat Bone they were able to torture Boston with their dreaded exorcism. During that time Metallica grew to be a favorite with The Shack. Their flannel shirts, bell bottoms, juvenile acne and triumphant music gave unpretentious inspiration to Dana & Colin. Unfortunately it also caused the great divide between those who clung to the more TOUCH & GO record label aesthetic ( and rightly so, considering the state of horrid new music) and the more Metal-Up-Your-Indie-Rock-Ass mentality. Some Shacksters folded and within the next two years they would acquire X-DYS guitar player Andy Strachan, X-Maelstrom bassist John Queenan and the big papa of sound, Barry Hite on drums. The transformation was finalized and they were playing with the likes of White Zombie, SEKA, and Stompbox. With the help of much of the Boston recording studios they were able to capture a fist full of songs that made it to various compilations and a full demo tape. In 1992 the black plague (winning the WBCN Rumble in 1990) fully infected the Shack and brought on their sweet demise.
THE END.
PS. We did have the great fortune of WARGASM covering our song GREVIOUS ANGEL on their live cd: FIREBALL. No greater honor, for real!!!
