Brain Leakage (presented by Kevin Beacham!)

this is the year I swear the crew goes all out

About Me

It's fitting that Brain Leakage is the first Rage Artist (where I'm not a rapper in the group) that I do a page on... I can honestly say out of all the projects I worked on that this was the one that I was the most excited about...still am really when I'm just thinking about it. Why? They were young (still in high school, 16/17 years old) and they were extremely talented. Seriously, I thought these kids were ready to run things.I don't know much about them before we hooked up so this bio will start there:It all starts with a guy named D Smooth (he gets his own separate blog later). He brought Mellow D by the Rage Cage (11-24-91). He kicked something and I was really impressed. He told me he had a partner, K.O.E (King Of Excellence) and their group name was Source Of Style. I told him they could come by the studio the next day. They come thru and I explain to them how the Rage situation work and they were down.Immediately we start working on tracks and hanging out. There was definitely a time when Zeke and I felt like their bigger brothers and they were rolling with us any and everywhere that didn't have a 21+ situation. As far as in the Rage Cage, we knocked out two tracks in the first couple weeks, "Source Of Style" and "Techniques Of Flowing" and things are going good. Then some crazy stuff happens (see the D Smooth Blog) and the crew breaks up for while. Over the next few months KOE is in and out of the crew for various personal reasons. Finally on 3-22-92 we talk and decide to put Detanator in the group with Mellow D (now going by the name Mixel Plic). They rock thier first show in Champaign, IL (3-28-92). By the Summer K.O.E is back in effect and we start to knock out even better music. There's all sorts of name changes and eventually I decide to work Detanator as a solo act and take the crew back to the original line up. They add a DJ, their boy, Enot.Around '93 they became the focus Rage group along with Savage Intellect (my crew). Their demos got some positive feedback from radio djs, label reps, and their Chicago Hip Hop peers/competition. We had a demo package completion and mail out planner for 4-16-93, but it never happened. We did do a photo shoot 2-6-93), but I have no idea where those pictures are (??). I take the pictures and we went to the city and did flicks in Abandon Buildings and sorts of crazy places (Me, Dread, Enot, Numskull, Excellence, and Detanator).I don't even know how to describe their style... Abtract-hardcore-styling-thinking man's Hip Hop I guess. Unfortunately, the crew eventually broke up for good. I can't remember exactly why honestly, around this time my life was super crazy with having me daughter, breaking up with her mother and so forth so that time is kind of blurry.... I think it may have just been the result of them still being really young and needing to figure some things out. Plus there was other problems with being young, such as parents...ha. Anyway, listen to the music that will tell you what you need to know. I just tracked down Excellence and he's still in touch with Mixel Plic (who was eventually called Numskull and then Advice Versa and then Tao the Intangible...this guy changed names so much...ha) and Enot so I'm hoping to get them involved on this page with photos, stories, feedback, and a better bio than this :)

Influences: I don't know for sure but if I had to guess: Heiro, Pharcyde, Organized Konfusion, Freestyle Fellowship and things of the sort cause that's what I remember them listening to and talking about.
Sounds Like: grabbed this from my "bio" for them: Abtract-hardcore-styling-thinking man's Hip Hop ... I imagine if they got signed the record label would have a sticker that said something like this: "For fans of Organized Konfusion, Pharcyde, Souls Of Mischief, Freestyle Fellowship and what the future of music just might sound like...".
