Chuck Hutcheson / Doghouse Studios

About Me

Chuck Hutcheson is an all-around musician of 25+ years. Having started music at 10 years old as a trumpeter in the 5th grade, Chuck excelled at every level and eventually attended Valdosta State College (now University) and Georgia Southern University as a music performance major. Upon leaving GSU, Chuck attended and graduated from The Recording Workshop in Chillicothe, Ohio in the spring of '98. Having always been involved in performing and music production, it was only a natural progression for 'Doghouse Studios' to develop and become a reality.
Chuck started recording with other bands & artists during his college days. Live gigs would offer other opportunities as groups & artists would ask for Chuck to come & add his formidable talents to their projects. Over time, church groups would fly him across the country to their events & recordings, and other groups would simply call him to come and "sit-in" with the band. Often times certain shows & gigs had no rehearsals, but would still "go off without a hitch." Performing by either chord chart, written music, or by ear, Chuck offers flexibility in the needs of the client.
Whether as a vocalist, saxophonist, trumpeter, keyboardist, writer & arranger, instructor, or whatever the role may be, Chuck is rapidly becoming one of South Georgia's best all-around talents. Offering his skills as a horn player, vocalist & keyboardist, Chuck has performed with many groups & artists through the years such as The 280 Cruisers, Sam's Drive-In Band, Lottie's Pocket, Devine Devotion, Daniel Hopkins & Daniel Gonzalez - Barefoot Crossing, Vinx, minister Derrek Hayes, Sandy Bennett, Jerry Holman, Eric Culberson, Fred McKinnon of Highest Praise Productions, Larry Cook, Neil Bush, Michael Cowan, Smook, the Georgia Big Band (formerly the Dublin Jazz Band), The Bluesonics, Mudshark, In Like Flynn, Janny Grein, Walt Jenkins, Barry Woods & Family, The Redbone Project, Billy Hoffman, Toby Harris, and many, many others through the years.
As a studio owner / producer / engineer, Chuck has worked with and recorded many artists, including Devine Devotion, Sixty Seconds Previous, Casual Kill, the Tim Sturgis Project, The 280 Cruisers, Charlotte Gibbs, Arlissa Whipple, Kim Girtman, Barefoot Crossing, Wayne "Batman" McMichael, DJ Vando, Michael Moss, Dave Price, Sam's Drive-In Band, various artists from the Soul Kitchen Songwriter's Workshops, Regina King, Michael Whitmore, music samples and editing for Kody, editing for Life Outreach Ministries, music tracks for the Appling County Show Choir, custom performance tracks for other artists, and various other varied projects, with many projects currently in the works. Chuck is also looking at starting an independent record label to promote local artists.
Having performed and worked with church music groups, blues bands, cover bands, rock combos, jazz combos, soul gospel groups, solo artists, professional and amateur studios, writers and lyricists, Chuck has a wide field of genre experience from which to draw. In addition to working with so many groups, Chuck is experienced as a solo artist and side-man, having performed for 4+ years as lead trumpet in the GSU Jazz Ensemble, as front-man for his own jazz combos, as a solo artist performing for private parties, weddings, coffee shops, community events, social clubs, and other various events.
Being well versed in music theory, as a multi-instrumentalist, and as a trained sound engineer, Chuck offers excellent advice and direction regarding song structure, instrument selections, arrangements & layouts, harmonies, and most things artistic. As a songwriter, Chuck knows the importance of the artist's creativity and the process by which those creative outputs are recorded, therefore he takes great interest in the artists with which he works.
Chuck is married to his beautiful wife Tammy, and their two equally beautiful daughters Amber & Brigit. Chuck resides in Baxley, Georgia, and 'Doghouse Studios' is located in McRae. His interests include ancient & Biblical history, weight-lifting, outdoor activities (which he rarely gets to do anymore) including softball, football, fishing, jogging, skiing, and anything ATV. His other job is in the family business of commercial windows, with which he is in sales.

My Interests

Music:

Band Website: you're lookin' at it
Band Members: Myself... I'm a jack of all trades. I'm a solo artist, writer, arranger, producer, writer, engineer, private instructor, and bouncer. I get calls frequently to perform with various groups. I'm pretty much a utility player.

As a "side-man / member", I've worked with many bands. Currently here's a lineup of "active" involvement:

Devine Devotion - soul / contemporary jazz Gospel (horns, bgv, keys),

Sam's Drive-In Band - oldies / classic rock (horns, bgv, keys),

The 280 Cruisers - classic rock / southern rock / cover band (horns, bgv / vox, alt. keys),

FUMC Baxley - contemporary music group (vocals, horns, keys),Appling County High School - show choir band (performer - trumpet, instruction, arrangements)

Influences: Phil Driscoll, Freddie Hubbard, Maynard Ferguson, John Coltrane, DMB, Dizzy Gillespie, Deliverance, Bride, anything classic or Southern rock, Rick Braun, Larry Carlton, Glenn Kaiser, Russ Taff, Mylon LeFevre, wayyy too many to list, and definitely wayyy too eclectic.
Sounds Like: My stuff sounds like a soundtrack to life. I've written some instrumental things where people say the song sounds like "everything". Maybe I'm just very hard to categorize.

Some things I write (to me) sound world beat, some things sound rock, some are smooth jazz, some are sound-scapes, some are post-modern hard-bop straight out of the 60's groove revolution, and anything in-between.

I write what I feel, and I hope people feel what I write. I don't actually have a high output of my own stuff, but when I do write, it's usually the kind of thing that moves people. I don't like writing "fluff" songs. Songs should have meaning! Too many people write just to be writing. Too many people are performing for the wrong reasons. From the heart is where it should come from.

Nashville & L.A. can keep all the junk writers. Let's make some real, gut-level songs that grab your attention & won't let go.
Record Label: starting one soon
Type of Label: Indie
