LOCAL PROMO COMPANY DEFIES NAYSAYERS, FILLS GAP by Craig Silliphant
MAZZFEST
Saturday 23
The Odeon
You know how people bitch and moan about the things they don’t like, yet never lift a finger to do anything about it? For example (insert whiny voice here): “small bands don’t get paid enough to tour through Saskatoon,” or “no one’s putting on all-ages shows anymore.” Well, in your face naysayers — because there a motivated group of young scenesters have arrived, and they’re not going to stand for this kind of defeatism.
Taking matters into their own hands, these music lovers have started their own promotion company, called royGbiv. It all started when Kristyn Wiebe decided to promote a show as a favour — and quickly realized she loved doing it. She was soon followed in her endeavour by current partners Stephen Bueckert and Vincent Geiger, who got interested after she had promoted gigs for each of their bands.
“All three of us have actually been close friends for years,” says Geiger, “so it’s easy to work with each other and it all came together nicely. Since we started we’ve been [putting on] shows in Saskatoon non-stop — and we don’t plan on slowing down anytime soon. We mainly work with hardcore, indie and acoustic artists, [and] our goals are to constantly bring bigger and better shows to Saskatoon, and try to pay smaller touring bands closer to what they deserve.”
Admirably, they’re taking the next step into a larger world with their latest idea — Mazzfest. May 23rd, fifteen hardcore bands from across Canada will descend on the Odeon for a festival planned and executed by these young lions. Local acts like Adolyne, Stallions, and Palms to the Sky will be throwing down sets, alongside out of town acts like Blindwitness, Method, and Fall City Fall.
“Mazzfest was just an idea of mine from about a year ago,” says Geiger. “Looking at the bigger hardcore fests in the states, I just thought it would be really cool to get people excited to come to Saskatoon for this. [We also did it] because the Warped tour doesn’t look like it’s ever coming back, to get kids stoked for future shows and to help smaller bands get noticed. Actually, since a lot of kids only listen to what MTV tells them to, even the bigger bands get [new] exposure. A lot of people have no clue how much talent is really out there.”
