SOFTY

About Me

One night Craig Bradford introduced Emily Rieman and Pete Litwin at a club in Seattle called Rockcandy. Emily said, "So I hear you guys want to make some gravedigging music..." and that was the beginning of Softy. They soon enlisted the support of guitarist Robin Peringer (ex-Kill Sybil), tuned their guitars down to drop C and starting writing some loud and sludgy fucking songs. Once on tour in Los Angeles while playing the Viper Room, the promoter said, "I really like you guys, but if you ever want to play here again-you need to turn down A LOT!" Our soundman, Paul Radabaugh was a touch deaf from years of touring with COFFIN BREAK so there was no such thing as too loud.
In 1994, Softy got in the studio with Jack Endino and recorded a 2 song 7 inch record for Y Records. The A-side of that record "Someday" can be found on this page. Samples of both songs can be found on Music Scene.com Softy played at SXSW to critical acclaim; unfortunately this proved to be the last shows with the original line-up. Guitarist Robin was soon replaced by ex-Hammerbox member James Atkins and drummer Craig Bradford was replaced by Norman Scott of Gruntruck . This last rendition really clicked musically and recorded the self titled CD on Negative Feedback Records with producer Martin Feveryear. The group disbanded in 1997 very soon after recording their first and only CD.
Softy played with many bands such as Alice Donut , DOA, Steel Pole Bath Tub, Girls Against Boys, Thirty Ought Six, Truly, Gruntruck , and their final show was with friend's Bad Religion at the club ironically where they met-Rockcandy.
REVIEWS:
Litwin's plaintive wail and Sabbath-influenced chord progressions mesh tightly with Peringer's sludgy rhythms, Rieman's solid rumblings and Bradford's kick-drum heavy pounding to produce a prime example of Seattle grind. The Rocket -- Seattle, WA
Local power storm SOFTY is nothing like it's name. Their hellacious set was well received by the adoring crowd. The Stranger -- Seattle, WA
SOFTY is heavy times ten. A supergroup of sorts, with various members previously in Coffin Break , Swallow , Gruntruck and Kill Sybil, SOFTY delivers crushing, metallic grave digging music for the hearing-impaired. Together only since March '93, SOFTY has already earned a reputation for their blistering live shows. Those shows along with their single, produced by Jack Endino , now has Seattle's collective ears ringing with the strains of SOFTY. SOFTY proves that names can be deceiving..
