SAKA BOYS

About Me

SAKA BOYS hail from the tiny village of Saka in Northern Ghana. They play traditional Kusaasi music using a one-stringed violin called a "gonje" and three calabash shakers. The recording here comes from a collaboration with American indie band, THIS BRIGHT APOCALYPSE. In February, 2007, armed with a fourtrack, one of the band members was visiting his former Peace Corps site at the secondary school in nearby Zebilla. Charles Braimah, a former student, helped arrange a session to record the Saka Boys live in a classroom. The tape was brought back to the U.S., and a song was written around a brief loop of the material.
