About Me

Sam Ross is a 23-year old freelance clarinetist in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, originally from Russellville, Arkansas. Sam just recently completed his M.M. in Clarinet Performance at the University of North Texas, where he studied with John Scott and Daryl Coad. He received his Bachelor of Music in Clarinet Performance, magna cum laude, in May 2007 from the University of Arkansas, where he studied with Nophachai Cholthitchanta. Sam has also worked with Greg Raden, Kelly Johnson, Deborah Chodacki, Frank Kowalsky, and Cheryl Cifelli. Additionally, he has performed in master classes for Frank Kowalsky, Jane Carl, Eli Eban, Fred Ormand, and Jon Manasse.Sam currently performs as E-flat clarinetist with the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, under Eugene Corporon. He has performed as principal and E-flat clarinet with the North Texas Wind Symphony and the North Texas Symphony Orchestra. He also performed with the NOVA contemporary music ensemble while at UNT. During his time at the University of Arkansas, Sam served as the principal clarinetist in the Symphony Orchestra and Wind Symphony. In 2007, he performed as a substitute clarinetist for the Fort Smith (AR) Symphony Orchestra. He also performed as a flutist and piccoloist in the University of Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, and in the 2006 Sinfonia Winds conducted by the former conductor of the “President’s Own” Marine Band, Col. John Bourgeois. While in Arkansas, he also doubled for various musical productions, including Parade, Guys and Dolls, and West Side Story. Sam has performed under the baton of conductors such as: David Itkin, Eugene Corporon, Anshel Brusilow, David Goza, W. Dale Warren, Jack Stamp, Mark Camphouse, David Holsinger, John Locke, Hal Cooper, Stephen Dubberly, and Stephen Melillo.Sam had the privilege of performing as a soloist with both the University of Arkansas Wind Symphony and Symphony Orchestra. He was a National Finalist in the woodwind division of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Young Artist competition in 2007. Sam was a finalist in the UNT Concerto Competition in January 2009.Sam can be heard on recordings of the UNT Wind Symphony on the GIA Wind Works (“Domains” and “Chronicles”) and Teaching Music through Performance (Vol. 7) labels.This summer, Sam will be performing as a clarinet apprentice at the Hot Springs Music Festival as well as performing, recording, and touring with the North Texas Wind Symphony.Sam is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, Pi Kappa Lambda, and the International Clarinet Association. He currently teaches master classes and private lessons in the Lake Dallas ISD and Little Elm ISD.
