Composer and Musicologist.
I am a professional musician that combines composition, performance, and education. I compose mainly for myself and perform mostly as a flamenco guitarist and accompanist. I have worked as an associate music instructor at Santa Ana College since 2001. I have also been a principal musician for the Department of Dance at UC Irvine on and off since 2001.
I am currently doing graduate research in Musicology at CSU Fullerton where my thesis will be: Music and Theater in Mexican Los Angeles: 1930-39.
Other topics I have developed during my graduate work there are: The State of Research on the Mexican Musical Baroque Period, Musical Romanticism in Nineteenth Century Mexico, and Expanding the Definition of Baroque Music Through the Example of Latin American Baroque Hybridity.
My most recent work is an analysis, “Content and Form in Ecuatorial by Edgard Varèse with New Proposals for Future Performance.†Ecuatorial is a futuristic orchestral work influenced by text from the Mayan book of genesis, the Popol Vuh.
As an undergraduate, I also did an analysis, “Form in Sensemayá by Silvestre Revueltas,†an orchestral work based on the poem of the same name by Cuban poet, Nicolás Guillén. During that time I wrote on and analyzed two film scores by Revueltas, Redes, and Ocho x radio, and wrote on and analyzed Krystof Penderecki’s Threnody: For the Victims of Hiroshima.
About three years ago I started work on a book Mexican Art Music: A Historical Survey. This is on hold now due to graduate school but it is about 80 - 90% done.
