Everyday a new hip-hop artist or group is staking claim in the music industry or proclaiming greatness. It’s not often that a group actually deserves the praise it garners from fans. Even rarer is the occasion in which a group shows the promise, potential, or raw talent that is apparent from watching the Young Lyrical Soldiers on stage, in the studio or just socializing with peers. The Young Lyrical Soldiers, formerly known as YLS has remarkably only been together for little over a year and already have solidified themselves as major staples in The Carolina teen music scene. With substance, swagger and lyrical content that speaks volumes to their name, YLS certainly will not be awaiting a lucrative recording contract for much longer.Independently, the group started out with four members: buTTah, K-check, Drizzle, and Detinator. They began as a quartet of mixed styles and a myriad of lyrical abilities. K-check, whose real name is Kwasi Chabwera, told Artistopia that, “…YLS started out as just a group of friends… who hardly even made songs together…†Daryan Wilkinson, known as “Drizzle†remembers the times when doing music with all four original members was difficult, “There was a lot of different schedules to revolve aroundâ€, he declares. But they kept pushing working together and eventually became closer musically, stylistically, and brotherly. “We’re more like brothers than we ever would have thoughtâ€, says Eric Sutton also know as buTTah.Recently the group has been cited for many performances, appearances, and hosting gigs since their inception in January of 2008. They have appeared in the most popular of venues that Eastern Carolina has to offer: Downtown Greenville’s Boardwalk, popular Faces Lounge, local High Schools, among others. This group has experienced a quick uprising and a steady fan base but also their hardships have led them to the newly formed trio of Drizzle, K-check, and buTTah. Former YLS member “Det†still cooperates with the group in all aspects of music except rapping on songs. It is a delicate situation that the group is very sensitive about and the reality of the situation is something all-too-common in the music industry. With one member ousted, the Young Lyrical Soldiers continue to pursue their original career goals without succumbing to the regular methods of recording artists who “sell their soul†for opportunities. The Young Lyrical Soldiers have intrigued the likes of DJ Whizz Kid, DJ Terminal, Market Executives, and Talent scouts from Independent Labels. In this case two words cannot be escaped while listening to the YLS trio. Unsigned Hype. Despite all the trials and tribulations they have faced, they stay true to their roots and always dedicate a few album songs to the Churches in the Eastern Carolina Area. Something not even platinum-recording artists’ practice today.Certainly the teen music scene will not be complete without this swagged-out, talented group of high school students. With their growing fan base, ascending following, musical influence in Greenville, North Carolina and chameleon-like versatility, K-check, Drizzle, and buTTah are sure to create problems for the unbalanced market.
