So Herge is walking down a concrete aquaduct hundreds of miles long, trying to conceptualise Tintin In California, when a large futurist painter and a short, pudgy vorticist inker, each donning a hat, stumble across his path.
"Fucking hot out here," claims Herge. "Can't see past my own sweat." The futurist nods to the inker, who takes an extra hat from his pouch and hands it to Herge. "Mighty kind of you." An awkward pause. Everyone looks in a different, absolute direction. "Come on, you two. What say we build a raft and float south? I've got just the project to keep you busy."
Prone to following charismatic leadership, the painter and inker help the penciller construct a raft from dry and brittle oak. At sunrise the three explorers set sail for a whole nother kind of cartoon, picking up a dadaist metal head along the way, who happens to cook lots of ribeye steak and enjoys what he calls "the angelic yet tragic voices of coyotes at predawn".
"But what happens when we get to those giant spinning blades, Herge," he mentions one gleaming afternoon, sprawled out on a sloping concrete beach.
Laughter, after which Herge exclaims, "Guess you're gonna have to just put on your pith hat, and...er...draw faster!"
