The Soul Has No Ethnic Origin

About Me

The movie “The Soul Has No Ethnic Origin” is a short story of the Bulgarian sculptor Vasko Vassilev. During the summer of 2007 he represented his art and Bulgaria on the Festival “Bulgarian Seasons in New York 2007”. The art of the sculptor is a path of the search of his Roma ethnic origin. Vasko is influenced by the wisdom and messages of many cultures; he has discovered the joy of creating. His sculptures turn into symbols – signs of the eternal human values: Love, Wisdom, Truth, and Freedom. Here “the Soul” undresses its ethnic cover and reveals its real divine origin.
The location in the beginning of the film is magical and key place between two worlds: Nature and Civilization. The river separates New Jersey -- the garden state and New York -- the empire state. The river is a symbol of the circle of movement, purification, and renewal. There the two worlds shake hands through the bridge. It represents the connection between our internal world, our nature, intuition and our outer manifestation as culture and connection with the society. The title of the film “The Soul Has No Ethnic Origin” reminds us not to forget our internal nature. Color of skin and other ethnic differences shouldn’t separate us! Human beings have the freedom of choice; therefore, we are all creators in nature. Anyone can reach fulfillment in their lives, whether it is personal, professional, or both. The sculptor is asking the “Freedom” - am I really free to realize the desires of my soul. Since ancient times the snake is chosen as a symbol with multiple meanings, as wisdom, cyclic recurring, infinity, and transformation. Similarly, the artist transforms the invisible, his idea, into the visible sculpture. The Soul is the connection between mind and body. Thus, the creator, the Soul, and the Snake are mediums between the spiritual and material worlds. One of the artist’s sculptures, “The Great Goddess,” holds two snakes in her hands. One snake is a symbol of digression (the black pillar in the Egypt mythology). The other snake represents liberation or evolution (the red pillar). The main message in the film is for us to understand our nature, to reach our center – the soul, and to fulfill ourselves as free creative creatures.
