Bravo’s History
The group “Bravo†was founded in 1983 in Moscow. During this time not only rock-music, but “every unauthorized public performance†was forbidden and ran the cruel censorship.The first band members were – Evgeny Havtan – guitars, composer,
Zhanna Aguzarova (Ivonna Anders) – vocals and text writer, Andrey Konusov – bass,
Alexsander Stepanenko – saxophone, keyboards, Pavel Kuzin – drums. Dmitry Sabinin was a producer.
Bravo’s music style then was a mixture of the rock’n’roll and “new waveâ€. Their first performances took place in student’s lecture rooms and clubs. Already after first concerts Bravo became the star of “Moscow underground scene†of that time. The unusual band image and style, the appearance and way of living of its members couldn’t stay unnoticeable and very soon several warnings were given to the group from public agents of the KGB etc.
Even being forbidden, Bravo kept on singing in public. In winter 1984 the group was arrested straight during the concert. Bravo was accused of illegal business undertakings, mockery at present political system and so on. As a Result - Zhanna Aguzarova, who was a soloist of a group, was sentenced to imprisonment for 1,5 year and then sent out to Siberia. The guitarist Evgeny Havtan was sent down from the university and other musicians got a lot of problems at their work. Because of these troubles with authorities Bravo had to stop their work for almost a year.
But before musicians were detained they had time to finish the recording of the “cassette albumâ€. That album was potted on the rehearsal center of the group. In a moment the album became a best-seller and was spread all over the USSR.
In 1985-1986 M.Gorbachev came to power and political “warming†started. Bravo was allowed to continue its activity.
In 1986 the group was invited to work for the official state organization. Since that time Bravo had a lot of performances (up to 30 concerts per month) all over the country, actively recorded songs, took part in TV programs.
In 1987 almost simultaneously came out the first vinyl albums of Bravo recorded by Russian “Melodiya†and Finnish “Polarvoxâ€. More than five millions of the records of Russian editions were sold out for 260 rubles of royalties (an equivalent value was about 260 US dollars at that time). Before Zhanna Aguzarova left in 1988 the band managed to give a lot of concerts at big stadium (for 3-10 thousands people) and took part at big western fests – in Finland, Italy, Sweden, Denmark.
After Zhanna Aguzarova went out Bravo was searching for a new soloist and had very few concerts during two years. In 1990 Valery Sutkin came and the new phase in development of the group started. Its style changed to a mixture of the rock’n’roll, twist and swing.
1991-1994 were the most saturated years in creative biography of the band. Musicians gave more than 1000 of concerts and travelled the length and breadth of the country.
