Little Ray

There are guitarists that play the blues and then there are blues guitarists. It’s a distinction that is not only audible, it is felt. Little Ray’s playing just flat has that feeling and he lets his guitar do all his talking. This talented Blues Guitarist/Songwriter - stirs up a musical Gumbo of Texas/Louisiana Blues-Swamp Pop-Rock-Soul that will make you want to listen over and over. Little Ray, is a native of Oak Cliff, Texas (same breeding ground as Stevie and Jimmy Vaughn). Born in 1967, he started playing music at the age of 10...as a drummer in the school band. At the age of 11 he was in his first professional group "Axis" playing parties and school dances. In 1983 Little Ray picked up the guitar and started gigging around the Dallas Metro area with bands "Terra Firma" and "Cold Blue Steel". He also did some jamming with Anson Funderburg (a big influence on his style) and other area bluesmen. Moving to Crowley, Louisiana, he began playing with blues and Zydeco players Guitar Gable, Rockin' Sidney, Jivin' Gene and many others. Finally moving to the Beaumont, Texas area, he performed and toured with Ervin Charles and formed his own group "Little Ray and The Blues Sonics". They have been playing the Texas Gulf Coast and South Louisiana performing shows with The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Omar & The Howlers, Eddie Kirkland, Tab Benoit ,and many more. In the spring of '99 Little Ray performed in Europe with Paul Orta & Lazy Lester.Ray has played with Lonnie Brooks ,Joe Guitar Hughs, Barbara Lynne , Pinetop Perkins, Little Milton , Monster Mike Welch, Ronnie Earl, Peter Wolf , Alan Haynes, Uncle John Turner, And many more. He has released, and performed on several CD’s some of which include "Hot Rod Blues", and “Going Back to Eunice Currently Ray holds down the guitar duties with Sonny Boy Terry, Joe Mendoza Band , Miss Annette Metoyer, and several other projects including his own "Little Ray and the Blues Sonics. Little Ray is a Texas born guitar slinger who has shared the stage with many great blues artist.

Recent write up from Houston Chronicle "I arrived late, mainly because my band had played all weekend long, but I got to catch both Sonny Boy Terry and Texas Johnny Brown's sets before my lack of sleep caught up with me. Sonny Boy was on fire as usual, and Little Ray Ybarra showed the crowd why (in my humble opinion) he is one of the best blues guitar players in town. Annette Metoyer belted some great tunes with the band, including a blistering version of "Sugar Coated Love" that had the crowd jumpin'. Texas Johnny Brown (YEAH) and the Quality Blues Band followed with a great set of old-school blues that kept the party going.All in all, it was a great night for the Houston Food Bank and for blues lovers in our fair city. This time Ray Ybarra better known as "Little Ray" with his band "The Blues Sonics' treats us to a Gumbo of Texas / Louisiana Blues-Swamp Pop-Rock-Soul-which you do not get enough. Elf songs op deze cd, waarvan Ray er negen zelf schreef. Eleven songs on this CD, nine of which Ray himself wrote. Little Ray is een typisch "Texas style" gitarist, die de mosterd haalde bij Eddie Jones aka Guitar Slim en vooral Jimmy Vaughan. Little Ray is a typical "Texas style" guitarist who took to the mustard Eddie Jones aka Guitar Slim and especially Jimmy Vaughan. Vandaar dat de ganse cd de sfeer uitstraalt van de eerste Fabulous Thunderbirds platen, maar er is meer, het zingen laat Ray aan anderen over, en dat zijn niet de minsten, zo is er Paul Orta die op "Little Girl" voor vocals en mondharmonica zorgt. Hence the CD the whole atmosphere of the first Fabulous Thunderbirds plates, but there is more, the late Ray singing to others, and they are not the least, this is Paul Orta on "Little Girl" for vocals and harmonica provides. De prachtige soulstem van Richard Earl neemt vijf nummers voor zijn rekening waarbij oa het mooie langzame "We Will Carry On" en "I'm Just A Fool To Care", bekend van Aaron Neville, van wie ook nog "Zing Zing" gecoverd is.Voor het overige allemaal eigen materiaal dus.Titeltrack "Going Back To Eunice" gaat over het kleine stadje met die naam in hartje Louisiana, waar de mensen houden van lekker kruidige "cajun food" en feesten. The beautiful soul voice of Richard Earl takes five numbers on his behalf which include the beautiful slow "We Will Carry On" and "I'm Just A Fool To Care", known for Aaron Neville, who also "Sing Sing" is retreaded . For all other material dus.Titeltrack own "Going Back To Eunice" is about a small town with that name in the heart of Louisiana, where people of good spicy "cajun food and festivities. Het rockende Chuck Berry ritme, vermengd met Thunderbirds invloeden, kan je moeilijk onbewogen laten. Chuck Berry The rocking rhythm, mixed with influences Thunderbirds, you can be absolutely difficult. Het daarop volgende "All Of My Live" is dan weer heel andere koek, langzaam, met de soul die van Richard Earl's stembanden druipt en een mooie Texaanse gitaarliijn, die herinnert aan "The things that you used to do" van Eddie Jones. The subsequent "All Of My Live" is quite different cake, slowly, with the soul of Richard Earl's voice drips tires and a fine Texan gitaarliijn, reminiscent of "The things that you used to do" of Eddie Jones. Meer Texaans kan echt niet! More Texan really can not! Een cd zonder een zwak moment en voor mij een aangename kennismaking met deze gitarist, ook al is dit al zijn tweede werkstuk. A CD without a weak moment for me and a pleasant introduction to the guitarist, even though this is his second piece. Zijn debuut "Hot Rod Blues" uit 1999 is mij onopgemerkt gebleven, maar schijnt nu ook op "Great Blues Recordings" verschenen te zijn. His debut "Hot Rod Blues" in 1999 I am gone unnoticed, but now seems to "Great Blues Recordings" appeared to be. What can i say....from this day...Little Ray...is here...to stay...!
