To an outsider, Jennifer Nickerson writing and performing country songs might seem like a no-brainer. She’s grown up in Dallas, Texas, but country music isn’t where it all started. Jennifer was essentially born singing. She’s been singing and playing piano in church since she was little, and has never had qualms about performing for an audience, whether it was the congregation at church or the slightly smaller crowd of stuffed animals in her bedroom.Though Jennifer has played piano since she could sit up, she started taking formal lessons on the instrument at age four, and started writing her own songs only a year later when she was five. Now at 25, she has taken that innate composing ability through the years with her and has written both the music and lyrics of every song on her debut album, “Girl Next Door.â€For as long as she can remember, Jennifer has dreamed of being a singer, but she put those dreams on the back burner and was satisfied taking on a more supporting role as a musician, whether it was playing piano or singing back up vocals in performances. It wasn’t until 2007 that Jennifer felt an overwhelming desire to pursue that dream of writing, singing and performing her own music. She met Dallas area producer Mike McClain through an old friend and decided that this was her chance to make those dreams possible. “Chasing Dreams†is the recording on the cd that really embodies the spirit of her journey to make this whole album possible.Having always admired the sounds and styles of Faith Hill and Martina McBride, as well as Shania Twain, Jennifer felt drawn to the country music genre when she set out to find her own voice. Coupled with country music staples including both steel guitar and violin, Jennifer’s alto voice lends soulfulness to her music, and her lyrics are honest and relatable. The album’s title track, “Girl Next Door,†is a perfect example of who she is, and along with the rest of the album, helps paint a picture that real girls can be real role models.
