Jojo Krako was the gangster boss of Sigma Iotia II's Southside Territory. In the year of 2168, a book entitled Chicago Mobs of the Twenties was left behind by the USS Horizon, and the entire Iotian culture had been formed around this one book. Krako was a rival of Bela Oxmyx, the boss of the Northside Territory. He had his men kidnap Captain James T. Kirk after he had escaped from Oxmyx. Krako wanted to be in control of the planet and offered to cut Kirk in on the action if he provided him with lots of new "heaters". Kirk refused and told Krako that the Federation was taking over the planet. He had Scotty beam Krako up to the Enterprise just to show him that the Federation was serious. Krako and Oxmyx were both convinced when a gunfight took place in the street and Kirk had the Enterprise fire its phasers on stun in the area to demonstrate the power of the "Feds". Krako then became the second in command for Bela Oxmyx. This resulted in Sigma Iotia II evolving into a more mature, peaceful society, thereby stopping the violence between the opposing gangs.
