The Twelve Steppes began in the early 1980s when Mark and Erik Gergis started subjecting anyone who would watch or listen to their fireplace mantle theatrics and awkward tape recordings. In 1993 they started recording songs on better tape recorders sometimes.
By late-1993, both were members of the Bay Area group Mono Pause. In late 1994, they moved to suburban Detroit for 6 months, made a weird audio-accompanied "zine" ("Deep North") about their trip and drove back to Oakland, CA where they remain today. The bulk of their recorded material was made between 1994 and 1998, which comprised the mythological "Oneward" LP. Sporadic live performances happened in conjunction with Mono Pause during the 1990s. In the 2000s, a few controversial performances occurred, once with the ever-paternal Peter Gergis even...
Their tragic but unforgettable performance at Heco's Palace in 2003, opening for Noise-setters Wolf Eyes, injured them (and many audience members) for life. They are both currently living in isolation as enigmatic, cripple novelists who will never change the world.
