About Me

View The EX's EPK80: THE EXPERIMENT is an element, a zone or a notion that is not real or unreal-it just is...From a superficial glance, it may seem difficult to find parallels between the culture and music of the eighties and that of current hip-hop. Certainly, none have go so far as to mesh the two clashing entities together like Mally Speaks and Chief Alone. Hailing from Toledo, Ohio—both rappers have took it upon themselves to spearhead a new movement in today’s stagnant rap climate. From the gaudy clothes and extravagant accessorizing, to the digital bleeps and heavy synthesizers, their debut album “The Experiment” captures the defining elements of both hip-hop and the 80’s. Teaming up with in-house producer Omar (Meccaz Finest Productions), the three formed the group “80”, developing the concept and piecing together the album during various late night studio sessions.“It really is an experiment, we wanted to step outside the box, expand on our comfort zone and really bring a different element to the game,” Explains Omar. On songs like “Electric Love”, and “Mothership”, the trio shows that they are unafraid to step outside the boundaries that are defined by hip-hop today, touching on subject matter unfamiliar to the genre. The collection of songs throughout the LP are sonically unique and a far cry from the ringtone driven records being promoted heavily by major labels. “The music allows me to really get creative, and I feel like we were in a great space when we put this album together,” states Mally, who crafted a majority of beats for the album. There is no set format throughout “the Experiment”, a far cry from the monotonous standard 16 bar verses, R and B hooks, and lackluster guest appearances that continue to mar the game. Rather the music maintains its freshness and unpredictability throughout. Although the album’s grandiose production sounds like a hybrid form of “new wave rap”, the lyrics and delivery remain up to date and relevant to the times. Without totally abandoning the music of the current generation, these 80’s babies developed a sound unlike that of any other rap group.
