About Me

Ula Hedwig’s career spans 35 years and includes theater, television, records and live performances. She appeared on Broadway in HAIR, and went on to do other musical theater in NYC including GODSPELL, LULLABYE AND GOODNIGHT at the Public Theater, GROUNDHOG at the Manhattan Theater Club, POSITIVE ME at LaMama. At New York’s Bottom Line she appeared in JUST ONCE, A HOT MINUTE, THE PHIL SPECTOR CHRISTMAS ALBUM, DARLENE LOVE-PORTRAIT OF A SINGER, and she played Ellie Greenwich in the original production of LEADER OF THE PACK. As a backup singer some of the people she performed live and on recordings with include PAUL SIMON (his Concert Event of a Lifetime at the Paramount Theater, NYC), ROBERT PLANT (1985 American tour), DONALD FAGAN (Rock and Soul Revue at the Beacon Theater, NYC), PETER ALLEN (Radio City Music Hall), OLIVIA NEWTON-JOHN, TIM CURRY, ROSEANN CASH, JUDY COLLINS, CARLY SIMON, PHOEBE SNOW, DARLENE LOVE, K.D. LANG, CYNDI LAUPER and a whole lot of other folks too numerous to mention, but she is best known as having been one of BETTE MIDLER'S HARLETTES along with CHARLOTTE CROSSLEY and SHARON REDD starting in 1975, then with LINDA HART and KATEY SAGAL in 1982. She appears in Bette's concert movie "Divine Madness". In 1977 the Harlettes took their own act on the road and soon after were signed to Columbia records, releasing " Redd, Hedwig and Crossley, Formerly of the Harlettes". (check out www.staggeringharlettes.com) In 1979 she recorded a rock album with jazz saxophonist JAROSLAV JAKUBOVIC called "Blast". She’s appeared on Late Night With David Letterman many times over the years backing up people such as TOM JONES, AARON NEVILLE, AL GREEN, BARRY WHITE, RANDY NEWMAN, DARLENE LOVE, and countless others. Along the way she has taught drama and voice to teens, has directed plays and wrote a musical called the Looking Glass which was produced in Chicago and more recently in Montclair, NJ., and is presently fronting a fun cover band in New Jersey called String Theory. Sounds Like: A bit of 80's nostalgia here! I wrote and recorded "Cat's Pajamas" in 1984. It was an eight track demo tape.(Note the electronic drum sound!) The video was shot in Hoboken, NJ, and NYC.
