Odona was the daughter of the Planet Gideon's Prime Minister Hodin. This planet was suffering from immense overpopulation because there was no disease, the Gideons didn't believe in any type of contraception, and they lived to be immensely old. Prime Minister Hodin hoped to correct this problem, by having Odona contract Vegan Choriomeningitis, of which was Captain Kirk was a carrier. Although he had been cured of the disease, Odona had no immunity to it and Hodin hoped that her blood, as well as Captain Kirk's, could be used to infect many inhabitants of Gideon, causing a plague which would reduce its mass population even though this would result in the death of his daughter. Even though Dr. McCoy was able to cure Odona, she was now a carrier, therefore having the capability to infect her people. She later returned to Gideon and, unfortunately, Hodin's plan was successful.
