************Luke McDaniel a.k.a Jeff Daniels a.k.a Earl Lee was born Feb 3rd 1927 , Ellisville , Mississippi . A typical southern boy he had a love of the Mandolin and Bluegrass music , Luke turned professional in the late forties then found himself sometime later opening for Hank Williams Snr in New Orleans . His career as Luke was pure Hillbilly/Rockabilly , as Jeff Daniels he stretched his wings in a broader Rock'n'Roll field and as Earl Lee wrote ' Midnite Shift ' which as we know was picked up Buddy Holly , this was written under the pseudonym of Earl Lee due to contractual problems with Acuff / Rose ************************************************************
************
In 1952 he recorded 'Whoa Boy' for the Trumpet label , these proved to be decent songs but no impact was made and so by 1953 Luke was signed to King Records , it was here he saw 6 records released , but again only minor sucsess . So a return to New Orleans and a further record recorded for the Mel-a-dee label , this was released under the name Jeff Daniels and was recorded at the Cosimo's studio with the best black musicians available in town , it was here that the great 'Daddy-O Rock' was produced .***********************************************************
***********
In 1954 he joined the Louisiana Hayride in Shreveport and was no dought influenced by Elvis , Luke was part of the touring company and by 1956 was urged by Carl Perkins to send a demo to Sam Phillips at Sun Records in Memphis . It was here that Luke recorded some of the best slices of Rockabilly to come out from the famous studio's , 'My Baby Dont Rock' , 'High High High' , 'Uh Babe' & 'Go Ahead Baby' are now rightly considered classics of their time . ************************************************************
**********
Due to Luke not receiving any payment on the Sun sessions ( only the band was payed union rate !!! ) , Sam treated these as demo recordings , Luke was not best pleased and so none of the songs from those Sun sessions saw a release , but they have surfaced on many a compilation over the years .

**********
Luke went on to record for the Big Howdy label where the fantastic 'Switch Blade Sam' saw a release , this mean slice of Rockabilly still chills with it's menacing lyrics . He later recorded 'Foxy Dan' on the Astro label , the 1960 release remains the better of the two ( the other was released on Big Howdy in 1970 ) .

**********
Luke left the music scene in the early 1960's and started his own trucking business & died on the 27th June 1992 . A great Rockabilly artist who never made that big break , just another in a long list of nearly men . Daddy-O Rock , Luke sure did ! .
