After years in denial it's only relatively recently that I've been able to admit that I'm ... a live sound engineer. Having originally seen live work as a stopgap while between studio jobs I've now spent 15 years on the circuit, with only occaisional forays into the studio.
While I'm on this confessional tack, there's a track called "The Rangers Rave"; a medley of sanitised football chants over a rave backing track thats played over the PA at Ibrox before every single game. The engineering on the track is accredited to one "Steff Orange". It is in fact yours truly. As a lifelong Celtic fan I felt at the time it would be inappropriate to admit to any part in this, although strangely I did allow myself to be photographed for "The Rangers News" alongside Walter Smith, Ally McCoist, Ian Durrant and the production team. Hence my once having to sheepishly 'fess up to a former client of the Timmite persuasion how a framed copy of said picture now gracing the office wall of a well known band manager of the Hunnite persuasion came about.
My most enduring memory from my time in studios has to be when absolutely bricking it at the prospect of a session featuring musicians from just about every Glasgow band I'd rated in my late teens. I'd got myself into such a lather about the whole thing that I tried to call in sick, which my boss was having absolutely none of. Within 5 minutes of arriving at the studio I was put completely at ease by the producer of the session; Edwyn Collins; and went on to have a memorable if still mildly awe - struck weekend. I wish him all the best on the road to recovery.
I still get the jitters before shows but it's that rush that makes the live experience unique. Being part of that moment when a connection is made is just the dog's bollocks.
...And I get to play my favourite CD's incredibly loud:- how cool is that ?

I've noticed the old bill around town of late. In pubs and clubs dishing out flyers explaining that it's illegal to purchase alcohol in a licensed premises when inebriated. Fuck me. I can't smoke indo...

Much of my work of late has been in smaller venues where I'm often frustrated by the limitations of the in house gear. I enjoy working with acts who "push the envelope" and I get results by pushing ...

Thunderstorm

Thunderstorm took out the TV aerial yesterday, was right over my flat. Really shook the place up. Was having a bit of a smoke at the time so I really thought the end had come :-)
