The Artist: Growing up as a Latina Lesbian was very difficult. I had some popularity at school and was constantly challenged with my real feelings. At some point in my life I even dated guys to disguise my love for women, and my fears of not being accepted. There were many nights I thought I wouldn't make it through the next day because of the fear I felt inside of me and the unhappiness that meant not being myself.

At the age of 16, when I had my first girlfriend things began to change. I went to counseling in the school and I found a support group called "Hijas de la Luna" (Daughters of the Moon) in Alianza Dominicana Inc. where I was able to talk about my real feelings and where I found out I wasn't the only lesbian alive. Still at that point in my life I was confused with religious believes and military policies. I thought about my future, and wondered where I belonged. At the age of 17 I joined the Army National Guard and hoped that being away from my partner would change those feelings. All distance did was confirmed that I could not lie to myself and I could not be someone I wasn't.

The last time I attended a mass was after a confession to the priest where he told me that I had to break up with my partner and ask God to help me. I prayed my heart away, attended mass and religious reunions twice a week, and nothing I heard, learned or read changed my feelings for years. I felt as an outsider, decided to come OUT at church, and never returned again. That took a lot from me, but I did it and was proud to overcome that fear. I wrote a song about those experiences because I felt the need of expressing how I felt and I knew other people were going through the same things. I wrote "Por Amor de Dios" (By God's Love) at the age of 21 and performed it for the first time at GALDE's annual picnic in 2004, it was a liberating experience.

Many people have approached me at performances and shared their story with me, and many of their stories have been mine. I feel relief to know that I and others can finally listen to music that speaks about our experiences. I did not have that in my young years-all I was left with was"El Gran Varon," ("Simon, Simon...") a song with a powerful message of acceptance, where the victim dies; my message is of empowerment.
