About Me

I was a skate punk, and then, all of a sudden, I became an academic. I don't know how it happened.I love to think and to talk. I like to rock out with heavy bands. I'm working on being able to stand boredom. I appreciate silence. I can be satisfied watching senseless TV or discussing obscure philosophy. I'll make you laugh. I'm a vegetarian and pretty lefty, but I make crude jokes about anything life throws my way. Compassion is a constant project, but sarcasm often strikes. My romantic sensibilities were formed through a serious encounter with 'Say Anything,' long ago. I imagine that that's both good and bad.I'd like to be more politically active. I don't do everything that I should. And I want to dance more.

Your hypocrisy - Suave brutality - Your empty religion - Your proud, hollow philosophy - Consumerism - Thrice daily, cannibalism - Your TV - Your constant sexuality - I oppose vehemently - I vow (108, "Opposition")

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

People who will keep me up talking all night. People who want to be kind. People who get me excited, aroused, and interested. People who can stare into the abyss and feel stronger for it. People who are willing to turn this world upside down. I'd also like to know a few more people who can make me laugh until I cry.I like brilliance and humility, strength and gentleness. Not a fan of arrogance. (Self-effacing humor is my favorite thing in the world.) And yes: anyone who wants to share their dog or go for a hike in the woods or catch a show or eat some good veganish food. Or anything else.I like to be taught to like things that I never knew existed.I'd also like to start another vicious rock band, purely for basement shows. (Few basements in south Texas, which may pose a problem.)

Eternal return of the same

I did it again: I painted my room yellow. I vowed not to let it happen the first time; and I didn't even consider the possibility this time. Yet, after a long trip to Ikea (thanks, Elizabeth!) and the...

Punk rock love

I just found this behind my toilet. I wrote it last year for "The Future Belongs to Ghosts," a small-run publication put together by my friend Terrance Hannum, Chicago artist and rocker. It's long--en...

Friggin' headaches

Ok, I've had crazy congestion and unceasing brainaches for more than a month. I've gone through antibiotics, two allergy medicines, and the only thing that works is multiple daily doses of an ibuprofe...

Woody Allen complex

Although I was tempted to write about my recent acquisition of an exercise bike (ha ha), I want to share a passage from Jonathan Lear's new book on Freud. I've been trying to immerse myself in psychoa...

Love's objects

Sorry for the snooty subject line, but it seemed fitting. I think I've discovered the beauty of the blog: rather than sending some little quip to three people in separate emails, you can post it once,...

Straightedge. . . .

OK, I posted this to the chicago hardcore board, which is the only board I ever post on--and only once in a blue moon at that. I spent a full 15 minutes composing it, so I didn't want to let it go to ...

You people suck. . . .

All right, I was recently cajoled into joining Friendster, which my good friend Heather described as "sucky." She's right. it's super boring. But in a matter of days, I got such lovely testimonials, a...
