Throw away your preconceived notions about ninjas. Part music and part martial-arts, The Ninjas put on a show that mixes music and martial-arts, and by martial arts we mean our name is The Ninjas. We are influenced by a wide array of genres including ska, reggae, jazz, pop and whatever type of art-indie-rock is trendy this week.
The Ninjas were formed in August 2002 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, out of the ashes of previous local ska giants By Wednesday and Ten Times Fast. We proceeded to explode onto the local scene in an exploding frenzy of actual explosions.
Since our explosive inception we have appeared with Mustard Plug, The Slackers, Andrew WK, MU330, Streetlight Manifesto, Big D and the Kids Table, Mass. Hysteria, Suburban Legends, The Arrogant Sons of Bitches, I Voted For Kodos, The Know How and The Kingpins, among others. Our warm sounds have graced the halls of venues such as The Magic Stick (Detroit), The Michigan Theater (Ann Arbor), The Blind Pig (Ann Arbor), Masonic Toledo (Toledo), Radio Down (Covington, KY), The Neutral Zone (Ann Arbor), and The Flint Local 432 (Flint).
In February, The Ninjas were the Grand Prize winners of Spontaneous Combustion 2004 at The Michigan Theater in Ann Arbor. Spontaneous Combustions is an annual fundraiser for Ann Arbor's teen center, The Neutral Zone. The competition featured 18 acts performing for the judges, an audience of 1,100.
Our self produced full length debut, Skaflakes, has sold more than 600 copies and we recently released our second full length album Platypus. We just returned from a week-long Midwest tour in support of Platypus.
