Paulo Perfeito, was born in Porto-Portugal in 1974.Bachelor of Music’2001, Summa Cum Laude from Berklee College of Music, Boston, EUA. Master of Music’2007 with full Academic Honors from the New England Conservatory.
In 1992, he begins his musical studies at the Conservatório de Musica do Porto and in 1995/6 he attends classes of combo and improvisation at the Escola de Jazz do Porto.
In 1996 he goes to Chicago to attend the Jamey Aebersold Summer Jazz Workshop, where he had the opportunity of taking advanced theory classes with David N. Baker, trombone with Slide Hampton, combo/small-group with Dan Haerle and to attend several seminars with Harry Pickens, James Williams, Hank Marr amongst others. He was present at the V Workshop de Jazz de Aveiro, the Workshops of the Festival de Jazz do Seixal and the Workshop do Festival de Jazz do Porto directed by Cecil Bridgewater.He received scholarships from the Berklee College of Music, the New England Conservatory and from the Instituto Português das Artes do Espectáculo.
He was awarded consecutively in 1999/2000 and 2000/2001 with the Jovens Criadores award from the Centro Nacional de Cultura.
In 2001 he received the Herb Pomeroy Award for Outstanding Jazz Composer and Arranger. In 2006 he receives a Scholarship from the NEC Beneficent Society in name of Ruth Tucker.He taught in 1998/1999 the classes of Trombone and Improvisation at the Escola de Jazz do Porto.
He was a member of the house orchestra at the Casino Solverde and the projects Corleone’s, Just Soul Orchestra and Heritage Big Band. He collaborates daily with RTP, the national Portuguese TV Station.
He is a founding member of the Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos directed by the composers Pedro Guedes and Carlos Azevedo with whom he performed at the main Portuguese jazz Festivals alongside with Ingrid Jansen, Bob Berg, Conrad Herwig, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow, Gary Valente, Rick Margitza, Chris Cheek, Rich Perry and Mark Turner.
He appears as a guest on the CD “A Lenda†by Carlos Azevedo.
Paulo performed with the Remix Ensemble-Casa da Musica under the direction Stefan Asbury
Composed in 2002 four arrangements for Voice and Big Band as commissions of the Festival de Jazz do Funchal.
He is the Musical Director and Conductor of the Orquestra Juvenil do Centro – Ministério da Cultura.
Paulo has been involved the project Jacinta Canta Monk where he had the opportunity of orchestrating the music of this composer for the Orquestra FilarmonÃa das Beiras and the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa.
In 2003 he begins (to the present) teaching Analysis and Arranging and Composition at the Jazz department of the Escola Superior de Musica e Artes do Espectáculo do Porto.
He appears at the Festival de Jazz de Guimarães 2004 conducting the Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos playing a commissioned piece of his own.
As a request from the Tubist Sérgio Carolino we writes a composition for Tuba duo and Drums which was premiered at the 2004 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Budapest, having done since then several compositions to feature this amazing player.
In 2005 Paulo wrote for the prestigious Netherlands Metropole Orchestra as a member of the Euroring Workshop. In 2006 Paulo composes Bodhi Suite, a comission from the Festival de Jazz do Porto, which originated the album under the same title. This album is integrated in his debut project with ArtistShare. In 2007 Bodhi Suite was presented in Festa do Jazz no São Luiz as well as another composition entitled Origin, commissioned and performed by this venue's resident ensemble.
Late 2007, as trombonist and composer, he joins the European Movement Jazz Orchestra which performs two of his compositions at Centro Cultural de Belém for the closing event of the Portuguese presidency of the European Union.
