Triphazard are a four piece band who are born and bred in Merseyside which consists of two girls and two guys.
The bands roots began when Stef Stokes, a successful solo performer wanted to form a band. Stef, since the age of 14 had gained recognition on TV, newspapers and radio but wanted to be recognised as a music professional similar to Chrissie Hynde, Debbie Harry and Annie Lennox.
Stef Stokes has been singing and performing all her life, but it was Christmas 2003, just after her 15th birthday, when her career began to take off. She had just recorded a demo and it was her interpretation of Fiona Apple’s ‘Paper Bag’ that caught the attention of agent Lyn Staunton. As a result of this, she became a guest artist on her radio show, ‘Stars in Your Ears’ on BBC Radio Merseyside successfully achieved record of the week. A succession of radio appearances took place, one of which included an interview with Ian Prowse from the band Amsterdam.
She was introduced to a songwriter called Davy Edge and he wrote and produced a track called ‘Still Here,’ which reached no.1 on the ‘Aiiradio Charts.’ It was through Aiiradio that she was contacted by Aarion Lee from the US band Koalition. He requested her to record some vocals for the band, which she was thrilled about and ended up producing some ‘stunning results,’ such as ‘Black Rain’ reaching no.20 in the American charts. Due to this succession of achievements, an appearance on ITV’s Granada Reports followed along with many appearances on numerous radio stations and newspaper articles.
Stef was then contacted to record ‘What’s Wrong with Dreamin’?’ a ‘classic masterpiece’ recorded at Elevator Studio’s in Liverpool. It attained critical acclaim and yet another no.1 on the ‘Aiiradio Charts.’ From here, a series of tracks were recorded, including ‘Let Go’ and yet another no.1 occurred from the ‘hypnotic groove’ of ‘For My Lover’ which spent nearly 6 months in the charts.
After meetings with various managers, Stef was advised to set up a band in November 2004, producing ‘Hegemony’ which was later changed to Triphazard. The name was changed due to it proving too difficult for people to remember, pronounce and spell. After much time spent composing, rehearsing and perfecting tracks, Triphazard began to play live, building up a strong following and a string of unforgettable gigs and media attention. They have played major venues throughout the country, such cities include: Leeds, Liverpool, London and Manchester.
The present line up is line up is: Stef Stokes (main vocals), Jenni Stokes (keyboard and backing vocals), Mark Dutch (guitar and backing vocals) and Paul Dutch (drums) with the average age of 19. Triphazard are a collaboration of three different genres: indie, pop and rock. Individually they have a wide variety of music influences ranging from Trivium to Toris Amos and this is reflected in their music style. They have been compared to such influential bands as Blondie, The Pixies and The Clash.
‘Phase 2’ was recorded in Liverpool and released in 2005. The track gained critical acclaim and Phil Key from ‘The Daily Post’ reviewed the track as, ‘A powerful number with a good melodic line and interesting hook. Above all, is Stef’s voice, one that suggests a maturity beyond her years, a strong, powerful almost bluesy voice.’ Later that year, Phil Key dubbed her as one of the top 20 people in Merseyside most deserving to succeed.
March 2006, the band reached no.3 with ‘Phase 2’ in Channel 4’s Popworld Charts with over 1 million votes. At the same time, they also got through to the Juice FM finals for ‘The Next Big Thing.’ Additionally, Stef won an award from ‘Garageband.com’ as ‘Best Female Rock Singer’ for both March and April 2006.
