Tucked away in a remote corner of northwestern Illinois, at the dead end of a dead end road, exists a sanctuary for an extended family of extraordinary characters that have been blessed with the presence of a genuinely pure talent. The hideaway sits on the majestic Pecatonica river, and it’s a dignified example of a scenic Midwestern landscape. On the most fortunate nights, after an unnatural amount of Old Milwaukee Light has been consumed by all, the whimsical ring of an acoustic guitar will silence the crickets and the critters rustling in the weeds. Soon after, a powerful voice will penetrate the tranquil air of the night. At that moment, the experience has begun. The setting is the Compound, and the captivating center is “The DP Experience.â€Don P has paid his dues through his involvement with countless music projects that have spawned in the area from which he hails. He continues to lend his talents to a punk rock band known as “Zygote,†for whom he plays drums, and a country band that he fronts which is aptly named “Dirt Beer Hangover.†DP is a truly diverse artist, but the crown jewel of his projects and his geographic location is “The DP Experience.†Don honed his style in the back forty of civilization, otherwise known as the Compound (to which he pays plenty of homage), where he emerged as a profoundly unique force by blending guitar styles that include (but are not limited to) traditional blues, bluegrass, folk, reggae, and punk with melodic vocal accompaniments and stunning hip hop influenced lyrical assaults. Don claims to have been dropping “dope lyrics†since the age of six, but considering his brilliance, he must have popped out of the womb spitting rhymes. “The DP Experience’s†lyrical content is mostly based on actual events, which are usually as absurd as his discriptions of them. It ranges from heart tugging sentiment to the more common outlandish rhythmic stories that leave the listener rolling on the floor in laughter, and never lose their luster. Don has taken the plight of a man scorn, fused it with an appreciation for friends and atmosphere, and allowed the elements to become a muse for an unparallelled style of music that is completely his own. Whether spinning a tale of terd reminisce in tacos, or expressing his fondness of the ganja, “The DP Experience†is a slightly tarnished gem that echoes the rusted wind vanes and decrepit barns found in the upper left hand corner of the land of the Lincoln.
