Who is this man known as Papa Muntu?, you may ask. Well, let I give you a likkle rundown on dat den. Born in Jamaica, Papa Muntu (perhaps known only as Muntu then...) started out his musical career as a reggae radio DJ in England. He also enjoyed singing and, at the encouragement of Toots Hibbert, decided to pursue a career as a reggae singer. His career as such was officially launched when, in 1983, Papa Muntu and his band opened up a show for Toots & The Maytals. Later, with a band called the Uptown Allstars he went on tour to California. In the intervening years Papa Muntu has become an award-winning singer who has opened for or worked with many top reggae artists including Peter Tosh, Yellowman, Freddy McGregor, Buju Banton, Luciano, Sizzla, Roots Radics, Israel Vibration, Steel Pulse and many more. He has toured throughout the U.S., England, Europe and North Africa. Although he has worked primarily as a reggae artist, Papa Muntu has also been involved in jazz, and has worked with artists such as Gil Scott Heron, Taj Mahal, Junior Walker & The Allstars and others. His new album, which was produced by Simon Rochester (who's also produced albums for artists such as Sugar Minot), is finished and soon-to-be released. Check back here for updates on that, but in the meantime, Papa Muntu cordially invites each and every one of you to come out to one of his shows, because singing for you is what he really loves the most.
