About Me

Born in Prague on March 16th 1988, Jiří Kalous took his first musical steps with formal lessons in classical piano but soon fell for another kind of music and a different instrument – rock guitar. At fourteen, he bought his first six-string and started hammering out Led Zeppelin licks, before approaching rock guitarist Richard Procházka for lessons two years later. Nudged towards his first jazz recordings by Jimi Hendrix and a handful of blues legends, he was immediately fascinated by the complex harmonies rarely found in rock music. At the 2005 Prague International Summer Jazz Workshop he met David Dorůžka and started studying with him, then with Libor Šmoldas when David moved to Paris. After high school Jiří entered jazz departement of Prague’s Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory (VOŠ). Now in his second year, he plays in the VOŠ Big Band, conducted by Milan Svoboda which recently completed a successful tour to San Francisco and the Back Side Big Band. He also leads his own trio through which he’s developing his personal approach to jazz and a way to express himself through his own music and in which he collaborates with players like Jakub Doležal, Petr Kalfus or Marcel Bárta.
