I ask you to save your vote for Kinky! Every Texan is an Independent at heart. Kinky is running with the people and for the people.
A true Independent for Texas! We cannot afford four more years of Texas being ruled by special interests, it's time for a real change. I ask you, whether a Republican or Democrat - save your vote for Mr. Friedman.
Some of Kinky's main issues include; Improving our public education system, The lack of affordable health care for Texas, Our border relations with Mexico, and our reliance on foreign fuels, which would be lessened by the introduction of renewable energy sources such as bio diesel and ethanol.
Kinky will improve the education system by legalizing casino gambling to bring in billions per year; Increase teacher salaries, which is currently $6,000 below the national average; Stopping the practice of teaching to the test. The TAKS shouldn't be the sole focus of education in Texas. It's time to put Teachers in charge of education not special interests from the Governor. Why is the state spending millions of dollars to propagandize the lottery, let's spend it on education.
Kinky is opposed to the Trans-Texas Corridor since it relies on toll road construction. He feels that the TTC is a land grab of the ugliest kind, with land being taken from hard-working ranchers and farmers in little towns and villages all over Texas.
Kinky is not anti-death-penalty, but he is "anti-the-wrong-guy-getting-executed." Texas needs to take a serious look at the way it implements capital punishment—no one in this state wants the blood of innocent people on their hands.
He believes in a woman's right to choose when it comes to abortion.
Kinky favors optional, non-denominational prayer in school. He believes there's nothing wrong with children believing in something.
He supports gay marriage and equal rights for all. He believes that the constitution protects everyone. As he says, "they have a right to be as miserable as the rest of us."
Kinky also favors both state and federal funding of stem cell research.
He also believes in redistricting reform. The practice of allowing elected officials to draw their own election districts must stop.
Kinky believes in the freedom of speech and freedom of religion. As he says, "may the god of your choice bless you."
His only special interest group is the people of Texas. Without a political party to appease or lobbyists to pay back, he will answer only to the people of Texas.
Kinky wants Texas to be number one in something other than executions, toll roads and property taxes.
He's 61 years old - too young for medicare and too old for women to care. He cares about Texas. It's time to really protect our borders, improve education, abolish tax on small businesses, uphold good ethics and rights for all, and keep in touch with every Texan.
Kinky is not running against Grandma, Perry or Bell - he's running against apathy.
Texans are the most independent-minded people in America. The last independent governor of Texas was Sam Houston. The time has arrived for the next independent governor of Texas Kinky Friedman!

My Interests

How hard could it be? Kinky's Common-Sense Priorities

Education: Texas has the second-largest population of any state in the country and three of the ten largest cities. That's an awfully big cart to pull with the horsepower we're currently giving our kids in Texas schools. An educated workforce and top-notch schools are essential to keeping our state attractive to new business, but we're failing the test.

Texas has the 8th largest economy in the world, but we're 1st in drop-out rates and 32nd in education spending in the country.

Teachers' salaries in Texas are over $6,000 below the national average. This lack of respect for the people who do our state's most important job must stop. As governor, Kinky will work to make sure that teachers are paid what they're worth. Period.

The TAKS test and its predecessor, TAAS, were invented essentially to make legislators look good on education. But studies show that rigid enforcement of standardized test scores doesn't help kids learn or make teachers more effective. Teach to the test and kids will learn the test—but not much else.

Healthcare: Texas ranks rock-bottom in providing for the basic needs of its youngest and poorest residents. More than one fifth of Texas children have no health insurance at all.

In 2003, Texas legislators slashed the Children's Health Insurance Program, pulling the rug out from under 170,000 kids. Not only did this put more of our children at risk, it ended up costing the state tens of thousands of health care jobs and $16 billion in lost productivity. Kinky believes this is reckless and short-sighted—no way to invest in the future of Texas.

We're a state that prides itself on friendliness and responsibility, but the message we're sending our kids is that if you're going to be born poor, you'd better not be born in Texas.

Renewable Energy: It's time for Texas to reclaim bragging rights as an energy icon. As governor, Kinky will accomplish that by encouraging investment and innovation in new methods of electricity generation and new fuels like biodiesel.

Think these are fringe technologies? Think again. Wind power plants, solar power arrays, and landfill gas capture systems are already in operation across Texas in cities from Fort Stockton to Fort Worth. Texas has been called "the Saudi Arabia of renewable energy," and firms from TXU to Kyocera are already clamoring for a piece of the action.

Texas is #1 in renewable energy. Developing our state's staggering potential in wind, solar, and biofuels will lead to a more independent Texas and help every Texan's bottom line. Biodiesel—it's good enough for Willie Nelson's tour bus, and the city of Denton is using it to fuel their entire fleet of diesel trucks. Biodiesel is fuel you can grow. That's good for farmers, good for the air, good for the Texas energy industry and good for Texans. With biodiesel, everybody wins but OPEC.

I'd like to meet:

TEN REASONS TO ELECT KINKY FRIEDMAN GOVERNOR OF TEXAS

1. My only special interest group is the people of Texas. Without a political party to appease or lobbyists to pay back, Kinky will answer only to the people of Texas.

2. What's wrong with this picture? The Republican and Democrat candidates spent $100 million in the last governor's racefor a job that pays $100,000 a year! And less than a third of eligible voters showed up at the polls. Texans didn't die at the Alamo so only 29% of us would vote in our elections.

3. Put teachers in charge of education! They do our most important job, yet teachers in Texas get paid over $6,000 a year less than the national average. Kinky will boot the career desk jockeys out of the education system, put teachers in charge at every level, and end teaching to a test that gets dumber every year.

4. Keep our kids safe. Texas prisons are full of drug addicts who are sick, not criminals. Let's get them into treatment and out of prison, so there's enough room to lock up sexual predators for the rest of their lives.

5. If you're born poor, don't get sick in Texas. Only one in five children has health insurance in Texas. If the best test of government and a society is how it treats its poorest citizens, Texas is failing badly.

6. Freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Political correctness has become stifling in Texas. Kinky wants to de-wussify Texas. People ought to be able to wish each other Merry Christmas if they want to. The Ten Commandments shouldn't be reduced to The Ten Suggestions. And a man (or a woman) ought to be able to light a cigar once in awhile.

7. Make Texas an international leader in the emerging renewable energy industry. Renewable energy is becoming one of the world's biggest growth industries, and only 0.7% of Texas' energy comes from renewable energy. Using proven technologies like biodieselfuel we can grow, we can expand Texas' economy, create jobs, and help get America off the Saudi oil merry-go-round.

8. The two-party system is broken. The current governor isn't getting it done. The Democrats and Republicans in the Legislature aren't getting it done. If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result, Texas is plumb crazy.

9. The best people get the job. With no political party demanding patronage jobs for party hacks, Kinky will hire the most qualified person for every job in his administration. Then he'll get out of their way so they can do their job and make state government really work for the people of Texas.

10. It's time for Texas to declare independence from politics-as-usual. Texans are the most independent-minded people in America. The last independent governor of Texas was Sam Houston. The time has arrived for the next independent governor of Texas Kinky Friedman!
