Aengus Og, formed in 2003, as with many traditional Irish music ensembles, was formed from session play. In the Irish music tradition a session, or seisiúin as it is presented in the Irish language, is an informal gathering of traditional Irish musicians in a Public House (Pub), someone’s home, barn, or just about anywhere where people can gather and the music can be played.
The band hails from the Phoenix, Arizona area and specialize in the traditional and contemporary music of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales in the form of Jigs, Reels, Polkas, Hornpipes, and Waltzes. They perform several original songs and also arrange Celtic folk songs and dance tunes with a special Aengus Og twist. The band also incorporates bluegrass and classic English/American rock and folk songs in their broad and exciting repertoire. Their instrumentation includes the guitar, fiddle, mandolin, Irish tin whistle, bodhrán (Irish frame drum), silver and blackwood flute, drums, and other percussion and vocals.
..The band offers dynamic vocals, 3-part harmonies, scorching fiddle, flute, and djembe along with tight acoustic rhythm guitar.
Line-up changes during these four years have seen individuals going on to play in other bands and the new members bringing with them new ideas, attitudes and influences, leading to continued creativity, freshness and enthusiasm.
