About Me

Young and fresh with a contemporary sound that spans musical genres, Teena Tamara (Tamara James) is one of the newest and most exciting female gospel artistes on the local music scene.
An experienced performer, she has won numerous awards including “Best Soloist” in the Youth for Christ competition for three consecutive years - 1991, 1992, 1993. She later went on to win the Teen Star Search Competition in 1993 as best gospel performer and overall winner.
In 1994, she won the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission’s (JCDC) national award for Best Gospel soloist in the high school category.
A former member of the gospel group “Forgiven”, she has done background vocals for popular artistes such as Carlene Davis, Judy Mowatt and Junior Tucker, touring extensively in Europe, USA and the Caribbean.
Forgiven released their first original single “I’m forgiven” in 2002, which was written by the group. The song was dubbed song of the week by the Daily Gleaner that same year. Forgiven was renamed “TNJ” (Tamara, Nicky and Jackie) in 2004 and continued to make beautiful harmony in the gospel arena
Tamara has also shared the stage with renowned gospel artistes, Pastor Donnie McClurkin, Trinity 5:7, Mary Mary, Toby Mac, Alvin Slaughter and CeCe Winans. Her unique voice, branded by music watchers as a cross between Mary J’ Blige and Alicia Keys, has landed her back up roles on albums for artistes such as Carlene Davis, (all her albums), Judy Mowatt, DJ Nicholos, Prodigal Son and the list goes on.
Teena has also worked in studio for Freddie McGregor, Luciano, the dynamic music duo Sly & Robbie, and George Nooks. She has worked with some of Jamaica’s finest producers such as Dean Frazer, Thomas (Tommy) Cowan, Danny Brownie, Paul Barclay, Mikey Bennett and Richie Folks and has also done various Jingles.
She is a member of the group “Perpetual Praise” led by radio personality Nadine Blair. Teena Tamara is now on a solo music career path and presently working on her debut album, under the direction of the multi-talented producer and musician, Dwain “Wiya” Campbell-Fletcher, founder and CEO of Barbwiya Music.
