Level 4

About Me

Level 4 is a new magazine that seeks to promote arts and culture in and around Southend-on-Sea as the nexus for the different cultural threads that exist in our town and county. Southend and Essex as a whole have historically suffered from negative connotations in terms of their association with promoting culture, however, recent regeneration activities have led to the development of a fledgling, and rapidly expanding, arts scene. Our intention is to promote this surge of creative activity to the community in a way which is intelligent, thoughtful and encouraging and to overturn the prejudices and stereotypes that Essex has become unfairly coupled with.
Level 4 will be promoting all forms of art and of culture (high, low, pop, pub, sub, gay etc) that exist locally (and nationally) but is distinct from other current publications in terms of depth, tone, diversity and pitch. Level 4, in academic terms, indicates undergraduate engagement and beyond level of interest (contemplation).
Level 4 Distribution:
Level 4 is available free from various cafes, hairdressers, boutiques and bars around the Southend, Westcliff and Leigh areas. It is also available in both Waterstones in Southend, HMV, Zavvi and PMT. If you cannot find one, please ask the staff in these stores as they may just be out of stock, in which case they will contact us and we will make sure we get some more in as soon as we can!

My Interests

I'd like to meet:

Musicians, poets, artists, designers, promoters, comedians etc. People who actively promote arts and culture in and around the Southend area.

Ed Tudorpole @The Railway - 17th January 2009

It wasn't until about 3pm on the Saturday afternoon that I found out that Ed Tudorpole was playing at The Railway that evening. This in itself was quite exciting, as although I couldn't quite remembe...

Where Have We Been?!

As some of you may know, Level 4 had a contributors meeting at the Railway yesterday to discuss ideas for issue 3, so after this had finished I decided to stay and watch the acoustic night going on up...

Panic @The Railway, Sunday 3rd August 2008

Before I start I will admit that I am a little out of my depth trying to review a night that was full of electronica! This is not generally my 'thing' but, I really appreciate the fact that people ar...

Sundown Garden Party, Priory Park, 27th July 2008

Let's face it, Sunday afternoons can be a bit of a non-event if you're not careful, so the Sundown garden party at Priory Park last Sunday seemed like a good way of livening up the day. Sundown Multi...

Redtrack album launch party @Saks, 18th July 2008

Tonight was Redtrack's over 16s launch party downstairs at Saks. I knew about this through myspace bulletins as Redtrack are in our Friends list, but other than that I knew nothing about this band at...

The Chess Club w/Archimedes and The Hoodlums, Sat 12th July 2008

The Chess Club is a club night held in the basement of The Royal Hotel, I'm not totally sure how often it occurs, but judging by the posters on their myspace, it appears to be roughly the second Satur...

Level 4/Southend Beat - Sunday 6th July 2008

This is the second Lazy Sunday Level 4 and Southend Beat have done together, and oh my, was it chaotic! I have to say that a lot of the initial problems we had were completely out of our control, but...
