Born on July 16, 1831 Naser ed-Din became Shahanshah on September 17, 1848 shortly after the death of his father Mohammed Ali Shah. His reign began well as he had Amir Kabir as a Vizier who made sweeping reforms, yet Amir Kabir soon came into conflict with Naser ed-Din's family and was removed and assassinated in 1852. In 1855 he invaded Afghanistan in an attempt to reclaim Herat. In response the british occupied Shiraz and threatened to destroy it unless the seige of Herat was lifted. Reluctantly, Naser ed-Din agreed. During the 1860's Iran's vassals in Central Asia were lost to Russia. Naser ed-Din travelled to Europe 3 times in an attempt to help Iran. During the latter years of his reign there was much unrest against Russia and britain. On May 1, 1896, Naser ed-Din was assassinated as he was leaving the Jomeh Mosque.
