Tenor Gianluca Paganelli and soprano Saffron Jones, together, make up the international crossover duo, Amaroma: "when two cultures meet, the result is mesmerising."
GIANLUCA PAGANELLI:
Tenor Gianluca Paganelli was born in Rome. He started his musical career at the tender age of six when he was picked to sing in il coro delle voci bianche della Rai. At the age of seventeen he joined Nicolo' Fabi's pop group as lead singer. It was during his early twenties, however, he discovered his love for opera and has not looked back since. He has sung in a myriad of operas including Rigoletto (Duca di Mantova), La Traviata (Alfredo), Il Don Pasquale (Ernesto), and La Boheme (Rodolfo). His sacred repertoire extends to soloist in Cecilia (Licinio Refice), Stabat Mater (Licinio Refice), Petite Masse Solonelle (Rossini) and Stabat Mater (Rossini). In the course of his classical career, he has had the opportunity to work with some of the world's greatest conductors, such as Zubin Mehta and Myung-Whun Chung. However, his experience in the limelight has not been limited to the world of classical music, as he has often appeared in European films as both actor and singer. He featured as the tenor in "mio fratello e figlio unico" (2006) and, more recently, can be seen in the remake of "La Dolce Vita" and "Vacanze Romane" which was shown on New Year's Day in Russia on Canale 1 Russia with Angelica Verun. He made his musical theatre debut in 2004 with "Phantom of the Opera" and "My Fair Lady", in the latter, interpreting the role of Freddie. This year, he made an CD of various opera arias, including Puccini, Verdi and Donizetti. In 2007 he was chosen to take part in the Opera Studio at the Auditiorium Parco della Musica, given by Renata Scotto who deemed him to be a singer with an extremely promising future ahead of him.
SAFFRON JONES: Soprano Saffron Jones is currently on her year abroad as part of her language degree course at Cambridge University. At the age of eleven, she took up the flute and thus ventured into the wonderful world of classical music. Despite early success and the achievement of grade eight by the age of sixteen, she knew her heart lay in singing. Her teacher was the wonderful Joyce Robson and was a member of the Goonvrea Singers who won silver at the Choir Olympics in Bremen in 2004. She has won many cups and shields at festivals throughout Cornwall, including the opera, oratorio, French art song and Lieder cups. At the age of seventeen, she was awarded the "County of Cornwall Vocal Championship" shield in 2004. She currently holds a choral scholarship at Cambridge University. She performs reguarly in recitals at university and has guested with Cornish male voice choirs, as well as appearing in the operas choruses of "Les incas du Perou" and "Venus and Adonis". In December 2006 she sang the lead role in Cambridge University's Gilbert and Sullivan Society's production of 'Iolanthe'. In January 2007 she sang the role of Mozart's composition in "Mozart and Salieri", a play with Cambridge University. In February she sang the part of the "Sandman" in the opera, "Hansel and Gretel". She was the ‘beggar woman’ in Sweeney Todd, which was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2007 and was awarded 5 stars. She studies with Sue Waters at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London and Ludovico Malavasi in Rome. She is currently a lyricist for classical cross-over and musical repertoire in Rome.
As well as singing, she has long been involved in the world of dance, having been trained in ballet, tap and jazz from the age of six. At 14 she gained dance GCSE at grade A and, a year later, received 100% in grade 6 ballet. During her years at university she has performed ballet duets in Rameau's opera "Les incas du perou" and Blow's "Venus and Adonis". In 2005 she performed in the English premiere of Pierpaolo Pasolini's "Orgia" at Corpus Christi Playroom, Cambridge. Once a week her garrulous tendencies became evident when she presented a radio show on CUR1350, the student radio.
