The Hardware Store are the unquiet soul of today’s music. They hate extremes so they try not to scream, they are sick of mediocrity so they will surprise you in the middle of what you thought was a chorus. Forgetful of the meaning of genre or style, they fish out handfuls of grooves from jams. Four members, all with so different musical histories one from the other that the only way they found to sedate quarrels has been not to create something unique that could satisfy each one of them, but instead something so free that could open a crack on what music can become. Rock, Blues, Funky, Jazz, Indie… it’s just senseless chatter, we are old enough to tear off labels from our clothes by ourselves.
This band loves to soil its hands, it absorbs the grease and filth of this society, and turn them into monuments to free thinking. Tirelessly committed both on creating and diffusing their message, they hate those who call music a product, and having seen for themselves what dealing with these accountants for artists means, they decided to renounce to this downward spiral. Break the fences, it’s time to create. The actual formation dates back to summer 2007 in Messina, Sicily, a small, provincial city at the borders of a racked and ruined kingdom. Grown up in a sterile environment, except for some rare and still extraordinary exception, the four members isolate themselves from the world to condense into music the atmospheres, the feelings, the blues that each one of them feels, hatred and anger, wishes, longings and restlessness.
The line-up is untouchable, it has always been so, music comes from it, not from the instruments or the musicians, but from the individuals, those individuals that bring the joy and pain of the world inside the soundproof walls, that’s what make music unique.
More chatter you would say, that’s why I invite you as I could do with a sexy lady to listen to their first work: Out of Service. An album which has been composed in less than an year, that wishes to present the two sided soul of this strange thing that I must call band for lack of a better term. Like if you were in a dream, you will find yourself between love and hate, sensuality and violence, carelessness and blues, you will fall in love, but you will not know with who, if with dr Jekyll or with mr Hyde, puzzled you will follow bit by bit this mad mosaic made of impressions and visions until its end. I assure you, you are going to want some more. You will see princes and bushmen, heartbreakers and tramps, masters and drunkards, you will resound of excitement and discomfort, asking yourselves what the hell were you listening to before meeting the Hardwares.
Gli Hardware Store sono l’anima inquieta della musica odierna, odiano gli eccessi e per questo evitano di gridare, sono stufi della mediocrità e per questo vi coglieranno alle spalle nel bel mezzo di quello che pensavate un ritornello, dimentichi del concetto di genere o stile pescano a piene mani da un’inesauribile materiale improvvisativo. Fanno fatica a stare dietro a tutte le idee e alle immagini che fluiscono loro intorno. Quattro componenti, tutti con passati musicali talmente diversi che l’unico modo per tenere a bada i bisticci è stato non già creare qualcosa di unico che soddisfacesse tutti, ma qualcosa di talmente libero che aprisse uno spiraglio su ciò che la musica, non dovrebbe, ma potrebbe essere. Rock, Blues, Funky, Jazz, Indie… sono solo chiacchiere, siamo grandi abbastanza per strapparci le etichette dai vestiti.
Ama sporcarsi le mani questa band, assorbe il grasso e la sporcizia di questi tempi e li rende monumenti al libero pensiero. Instancabilmente impegnati sia nella creazione che nella diffusione del loro messaggio, odiano chi chiama la musica “prodottoâ€, ed avendo toccato con mano cosa significa avere a che fare con questi commercialisti d’artisti hanno deciso di dire basta a questa spirale discendente. Rompete gli steccati, è tempo di creare. La formazione risale all’estate del 2007, in quel di Messina, piccola e provinciale città ai confini di un regno allo sfacelo. Cresciuti in un ambito praticamente sterile, se non per qualche rara quanto prodigiosa eccezione, i quattro membri si isolano dal mondo per condensare in musica le atmosfere, le sensazioni, i blues che tutti sentiamo, gli odi e le rabbie, le voglie, i desideri e le inquietudini.
La line-up non si tocca, non si è mai toccata, è da questa che nasce musica, non dagli strumenti, né dai musicisti, ma dalle persone, da quelle persone che in sala portano gioie e dolori dal mondo al di fuori delle mura insonorizzate, è questo che rende unica la musica.
Altre chiacchiere direte voi, ecco perché vi invito come si invita una bella ragazza,a sentire il primo lavoro di questi quattro: Out of Service. Un album composto in meno di un anno, che si propone di presentare la doppia anima di questa strana cosa che sono costretto a chiamare band per mancanza di un termine migliore. Come in sogno, vi troverete in mezzo ad amore ed odio, sensualità e violenza, spensieratezza e blues, vi innamorerete e non saprete di chi, se del dr Jekill o di mr Hyde, disorientati seguirete pezzo per pezzo questo mosaico di impressioni e visioni fino alla fine. Vi assicuro, ne vorrete ancora. Vedrete principi e boscimani, rubacuori e derelitti, maestri ed ubriaconi, risuonerete di esaltazione e disagio chiedendovi cosa diavolo avete ascoltato prima di conoscere gli Hardwares.
