EP STATEMENT:
Conflict is at the center of all great art. While this conflict can stem from the cavernous regions of an individual's complexity, or a simple dilemma like some girl not liking you, it is in the reflection of this discord that one can gain perspective. In their debut EP, Bury Me At Makeout Creek tackles this query: Must one leave his origins in order to achieve greatness, or can one succeed in his nest? "The idea sort of began this summer when I went to Europe for 3 weeks" says drummer and lyricist Cooper Link. "I was basically out of contact with everyone I knew for nearly a month, with no idea what was happening to them, and on the plane home I started envisioning returning to this world that had completely turned upsidedown." Link initially envisioned an enormous project with multiple storylines and characters; however, this was eventually downsized into the current project. Link, vocalist Simon Bean, and guitarist Doug Yamate began tackling this idea about two monthes ago, ending with about 9 songs that were fizzled down to 6. "It was really scary," says Yamate about the writing process. "We are about 15 hours away from starting recording, and we were still putting ideas together." The theme of coming home remained a constant, and the band concluded on the title "From Far Away Across The World" - taken from a children's book. You can find many literary influences throughout BMAMC's work in the titles and lyrics. The music itself induces influences from all colors of the rock-pop spectrum, including Minus The Bear, Say Anything, and Daphne Loves Derby. Ambient instrumentals become full on rock ballads with the snap of a finger, and Bean's powerful voice seems to be like a guide leading the way. Yamate's guitars soar and leave you humming, while Link serves as the engine on drums and the storyteller with his words. Dual and gang vocals are an oft used weapon, complimenting psuedo-impulsive lyrics that tell of conviction and regret as if it were the same thing. For a debut EP, this cd speaks volumes to a band that has only been together a year, and it is only the exposition into a much greater story to come.
