Drewsland, Kingston, Jamaica. As General Trees, Edwards was one of the most popular DJs of the 80s who is widely regarded as the best Jamaican speed rapper. The "fast style' is commonly accepted as arriving in Jamaica from the UK, through London-born Phillip Papa Levi. General Trees" debut, "Mi God Mi King", topped the chart on the island and inspired a number of Jamaican DJs to emulate his approach. He adopted the fast style and demonstrated his skill to producer Maurice Johnson who promptly recorded the DJ's debut. His inaugural chart success "Boasy Boy", led to a series of hits including "Heel And Toe", "Monkey And Ape", "Ghost Rider", and "Crucifixion", although his magnum opus was the anecdotal "Mini Bus". The song has since proved his best known hit and led to an award in 1986 as the Song Of The Year from the Jamaican Broadcasting Corporation. The award improved his profile and General Trees was soon recording with a variety of producers in Jamaica. He enjoyed a successful career locally with both his timely and topical lyrics alongside his legendary high-energy performances in the dancehall. A series of hits ensued including "Gone A Negril" and "Calling All Higglers" as well as a "clash album", Battle Of The Generals, that featured versions of "Lambada" and "Think Twice". The DJ also enjoyed combination hits such as "Coke Pipe" with Fancy Black and "Nightmare" with Little John. In the early 90s General Trees returned to recording at the Black Scorpio studio with Johnson, who continued to manage his career.
