Ah, my first band. It consisted of me on bass and vocals, my two brothers who played keyboard and drums, and a couple other guys. In 1987, I lost my best friend to a car accident. It was really the first time I had experienced losing someone close to me. That summer I threw myself into writing music and started playing piano. It was a good outlet for a big loss in my life.
A few years later, in college, I met Barb Harris, an aspiring writer of stories and poetry, who easily transitioned to penning lyrics for the music I would create. We have been collaborating on songs on and off ever since. The collaboration would evolve over time as each of us learned the craft of lyric writing and musical composition.
In 1993 I joined a local band called Crossfire as vocalist and rhythm guitar player. Over the next 5 years I enjoyed playing with some very talented musicians at many events and festivals. During that time I collaborated with other writers, appeared as guest singer in other bands and really started to take the songwriting more seriously.
In 1994 Barb and I received a Certificate of Achievement from the Billboard Music Song Contest for the song “What I’m Sayinâ€. In 1996 we became members of the Nashville Songwriters Association (NSAI), making frequent visits to Nashville. That lead to me being invited to sing an original song at the historical Ryman Auditorium, again home to the Grand Ole Opry. That was probably the most memorable honor to have been on a stage previously graced by legends. As the road in life often curves, it did for me and music had to take a bit of a back seat for a while, as I concentrated on my 9 to 5 career.
I missed music very much in those few years, and, in 2004, with much encouragement from friends and family, I decided to start a project to put out my own CD. I continued to collaborate on more songs with Barb with the CD in mind. We placed in the Billboard Music Song Contest for 2005 among the top 1500 songs internationally for “Precaution†and “Eye to Eyeâ€. I again joined NSAI and took advantage of the wonderful opportunities to learn from people in the business at their various songwriting and music seminars (which I highly recommend to anyone who wants to be a songwriter).
In 2006, Barb introduced me to Jon Williams, a talented recording engineer and musician, who helped to shape what I guess you would call “my soundâ€, which actually encompasses multiple music genres. With Jon contributing as a musician and producer, and Barb and myself as co-producers, this project is finally becoming a reality. We are currently finishing up in the studio and the CD is on target for release in the Summer of 2008. It has been a long haul, but a fun one, and I look forward to being able to share my music with you.
Thanks for visiting.
