About Me

Do you know we're the smallest owl in the eastern United States? I kid you not. And we're one of the smallest nationwide and in Canada -- on the order of 7" tall, which no doubt explains why some folks actually call us "the Sparrow Owl." And we're tame as the dickens, too. Do you know you can sometimes approach us out in the wild and pet our heads? Just try doing that with a Great Horned Owl: They'll be like: "No, I don't think so!"Yes, yes, we're somewhat similar in appearance to the Boreal Owl (and I repeat: SOMEwhat), but first of all, that species generally lives further north than we do; second of all, he's somewhat larger than we are; and third of all, we have redder feathers than that Aegolius funereus character -- more "cinnamony," if you please (So there!) My favorite hobby is nighttime hunting for the typical owl fare (rodents, songbirds, big bugs), but if you're very patient, you can find me snoozing away during daylight hours at my favorite woodsy roost. Just don't expect me to fly away when you approach. I seldom see you characters out in the wild and so I'm just as apt to be curious about you as to be afraid of you!Oh, yeah, and my main vocalization (or rather the main vocalization of the fellas when they're trying to woo me -- yes, I have attracted my share of bug-eyed suitors over the years) is a cool little repetitive whistle that I'm told sounds like a truck backing up: you know, beep beep beep.... Sadly, many websites characterize this call as "monotonous," whereas we Saw Whets prefer to think of it as "uncompromising in its minimalism."
