****This is my disclaimer and general purpose***Over the past couple years I've been slithering about the cafes, clubs, dive bars and otherwise un-savory parts of town following wherever the artists leads take me. What started out as just a hobby to help fill in the blanks has turned into a rather obscure obsession. Eventually, this obsession became a DIY movie with live performances and interviews that was premiered at Haiku Studio. As far as filming is concerned.....
If I love what they're (the bands, artists) doing, I ask permission to film and explain my intentions as clearly as possible. That I intend to post the clips online here on myspace and youtube, then I archive the clips for a later use... copyright laws are very important to follow ... and I don't want to infringe on anybody's rights, which is why I really need to discuss filming one to one.
I do this because it's for my own personal uses and amusement and usually not (but hopefully and eventually) for my own commercial purposes.
...
Now, I don't film just anybody .... I don't "seek out" talent or go where the popular kids say to go... if someone says "hey, you film so and so" I'll go check out the web page, listen and then hit they're live gig before ever bringing a camera. No promises will be made at anytime unless I intened to keep them. There are two exceptions to my method ... the first is if I come out to film artist and there happens to be more people joining them on stage than previously listed, then (if there's ample warning) I'll ask everyone involved if it's ok and include them in the filming.
The second exception would be if a band I don't know or wouldn't otherwise film asked that I film their set. This is the only time I would ever charge actual cash up front for filming. It's expensive and I know most bands don't have a lot of money to put towards such a project.
...The cameras are not the huge professional over the shoulder monsters but they do capture great pictures and good audioSharp Mini-DV video camera. (nicknamed "The Dink")A Canon HV-20 high def digital video camera. ("The Main")Processing done on a Mac Book Pro portable computer with Final Cut softwareThe Video/Audio stuff........
Ok... so the audio comes through good on the main camera (the Canon) . I usually keep it stationary and use a second handheld (the dink) for close ups, odd angles and effects. (since the audio on the dink really blows at loud volumes)Here's the usual menu for live performances...
Usually this for the entire set averaging 45 minutes.1. Videos with one cam for online use only -(one cd-rom disc)-- $75
One camera stationary with the entire band in the frame with or without zoom and pan. Includes the entire set with each song separated so you can chose which ones you'd like to post ---- this option is the easiest and doesn't take as much time or material to produce
-(plain playable master dvd) - add $25
-(additional copies) - add $5 each2. Videos using the two cameras-(one master dvd-rom disc)-$150
This utilizes both cameras that are then integrated for a more interesting video format... The funky colors and psychadelic effects are optional......but can be fun for a couple songs.
-(plain playable master dvd) - add $25
-(additional copies) - add $5 each3. Monster Masters-(dvd master discs of each song) - $25 each song
(not the option I'd recommend)
This where each video is off loaded separately song by song and kept as individual files in their huge gigabyte raw state ......some people maybe inclined to DIY their own DVD's and this is the best way to start such a project. Using the original files .... uncut.... not messed with.... as is..... raw footage.4. Staged music video -(dvd master discs of each song) - $500 each song - Also intended for either online or kept in large file size for possible promotional/commercial uses.
This option is more time consuming considering the amount of shoots needed and possible location changes. Any filming would need to be done in either public areas free of any surcharge or rents or in private residential locations. (This is only suggested to keep costs down)
Live performances can used and mixed in as well for added effects.
...What started as an obscure hobby to stay out of trouble has grown and evolved into a monster inside my head. It's out of control, I'm offically addicted to filming. Even though it is still just home videos, I do have a serious side when it comes to lighting, sound, camera angles and effects ....I do more than just putz around on the home computer with video and titles. I actually sit down and write out a plan....perhaps a storyboard or even a screenplay...I have no idea what to call it...but there is a method behind the chaos.
I currently have one full length "movie" completed named "Images Of Balance - The Music of Portland OR" and have already begun capturing more artists on film for the next "release".
......
If you or someone you know in the Portland, Oregon area might be interested in participating in these films...by all means forward their web page, profile or demo my way.
Just to warn ya though....like I mentioned above......I don't film just anyone...I have my ways...and I'm sticking to them. I won't promise anything other than if I do show up to film (with the artists permission of course) I will provide free master copies of the videos and a playable DVD to the artsists and only the artists. Sure........It's homemade video....kinda cheesy......but still costs a chunk O' money and time to produce.
