Millions of animals are euthanized each year because there are just not enough homes for them all. There are so many in shelters there just isn't enough room for them so many have to be euthanized if they are lucky they get adopted into loving homes. The overpopulation problem is huge and breeders keep breeding while animals are being euthanized and by still breeding they are adding to the overpopulation problem.
Puppy mills are another thing that is adding to the overpopulation problem. Puppy mills are disgusting and filthy places that keep they're dogs in small cages, so small that they can't even turn around and they breed they're dogs over and over with no recovery time which is called back to back breeding. After the female's cannot breed anymore they are usually killed or sold to any person who will take them.
The dogs in puppy mills are not socialized and they are usually aggressive and that usually ends in the dog being abused or the dog being abandoned at a shelter or just out on the street. The dogs are also usually ill because they are usually not seen to by a vet. The overcrowding, filthy conditions and just plain stress of everything causes illness in the breeding dogs and the puppies.Another subject that needs to get out there and see some publicity is the subject of pit bulls. Many people hear the word pit-bull and the first thing that comes to their mind is a evil, bloodthirsty animal. But that is very far from the truth. Pit bulls can be very friendly and most of them are. But many are bred for dog fighting a sport in which two dogs are forced to fight usually to the death. But even then those dogs can still be friendly the dogs were bred to fight other animals not humans. But still no matter what they were bred to fight, it is wrong no animal should be forced to fight another animal. I have met many pit bulls that are some of the sweetest dogs I have ever met they remind my dog who is a golden retriever.
Pit bulls do have stronger jaws then other dogs but their jaws do not lock. That is a myth, All dogs can bite if raised wrong. It is not just the supposed vicious dogs that can bite (rotties, pit bulls, Dobermans etc) it can be any dog if they are raised wrong.
Breed specific legislation or BSL is a order that is in place is some places in the world that all pit bulls or supposed dangerous dogs must be taken away from their owners and be euthanized. No matter how friendly the dog is they are torn away from their owners and euthanized. It does not allow the supposed dangerous dogs in that area or they will be taken away and euthanized. BSL also targets any dogs that are have even a little part of the breed in them and those dogs are also euthanized. Even if the dog is not mixed with the dog if the dog looks like he/she is and the owner does not have papers to prove they are not a supposed 'dangerous dog' they will seize the dog.
Also, avoid puchasing from pet stores, pet stores usually get they're animals from mills and breeders. Just like your purchasing directly from the breeder you are adding to the overpopulation problem and you have taken a home away from a wonderful homeless animal in a shelter.
If you purchase an animal from a breeder or pet store you are actually adding to the animal overpopulation problem yourself. Once a breeder or pet store has seen that there is a demand for that breed or animal they will breed more and alas will be adding to the animal overpopulation problem.
So lastly if you are looking to get an animal companion, please go your local animal shelter. There is almost always a shelter near you so you have no excuse in going to a breeder or petstore. Remember by adopting you are saving two lives! The life of the animal you adopted and you are opening up space for another animal.

A pet's ten commandments
1. My life is likely to last 10 to 15 years. Any separation from you will be very painful.
2. Give me time to understand what you want from me.
3.Place your trust in me - - it is crucial for my well-being
4. Don’t be angry with me for long and don’t lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment. I only have you.
5. Talk to me. Even if I don’t understand your words, I understand your voice when it is speaking to me.
6. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget it.
7. Before you hit me you strike me, remember that I have teeth that could easily crush the bones in your hand, but I choose not to bite.
8. Before you scold me fore being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I’m not getting the right food, I’ve been out in the sun too long, or my heart may be getting old and weak.
9.Take care of me when I get old. You too, will grow old.
10. Go with me on difficult journeys. Never say, “I can’t bear to watch it†or “Let it happen in my absence.â€
Everything is easier for me if you are there
~Take a moment today to thank God for your pets.
Enjoy and take good care of them. Life would be
a much dull ER, less joyful experience without
God's critters~
Now please pass this on to other pet owners. We
do not have to wait for Heaven, to be surrounded
by hope, love, and joyfulness. It is here on earth
and has four legs!
I did not write that, and I take no credit for it.Please add my youtube account, I use it to educate people on animal rights and I would love suggestions for videos.http://www.youtube.com/user/janna268912
