TEA WITH DANTE:
POET BRIAN MICHAEL TRACY
AND FOLK/ ROCK DUO ANDY HILL & RENEE SAFIER TO PERFORM AT
THE LOS ANGELES TIMES FESTIVAL OF BOOKS
ON THE POETRY STAGE,
SATURDAY, APRIL 26TH, 12:00 P.M.
The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books has selected poet Brian Michael Tracy and folk/rock duo Andy Hill and Renee Safier to perform their spoken word and music presentation, as featured on the trio’s Midnight Tea CD, on the Poetry Stage, Saturday, April 26th at 12:00 noon. Brian will read his poetry – also featured in his Driving With Dante poetry collection - interwoven thematically with songs performed by Andy and Renee. The trio has given this presentation since January 2007 at various venues in Southern California including Borders bookstores and KPFK 90.7 FM’s Poet’s Café. The CD is also being aired on spoken word and folk music radio programs around the country as well as CIUT in Toronto.
As Brian was preparing Driving With Dante, his first collection of poems for publication, he created the spoken word and music performance with Andy and Renee, who have won numerous songwriting and music awards. Both Dante and Tea pay homage to Brian, Andy and Renee’s artistic influences, such as poets Wallace Stevens and Larry Levis, or the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia (poem: “Jerome,†companion song: “Rippleâ€). The Midnight Tea CD was produced by Marty Rifkin (also featured on various instruments) best known for his work with Bruce Springsteen, including playing pedal steel on The Seeger Sessions Band Tour, Ghost of Tom Joad, Devils & Dust, Tracks and Live in Dublin CDs and DVDs.
Brian’s Driving With Dante collection takes the reader through a series of “water poems†reflective of childhood innocence, adolescent awakening into the experiences of adulthood, ranging from the depths of arson, murder and war to the elevated heights of music, science, poetry and love.
Born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts, Brian Michael Tracy graduated from Harvard University, and put his writing on hold when he moved to California to start a career in real estate. When his wife introduced him to yoga several years ago, Brian rediscovered his love of poetry and started writing again. His poems have since appeared in several issues of Yogi Times Magazine and he was a Featured Poet of Word Weavers and Poetry Super Highway.
Andy Hill is a student of the folk and rock classics and his award winning song “Two Trains,†is featured on Midnight Tea. Renee Safier’s blues and jazz vocal chops won the 2005 Telluride Blues Festival’s Acoustic Blues Competition.
The Los Angeles Times Festival of Books takes place on the UCLA campus, Saturday and Sunday, April 26th and 27th and is a free public event. For more information see the 2008 Festival of Books program guide in the Sunday, April 20th edition of the L.A. Times or go to: Festival of Books .
REVIEWS
“The songs (both classics and originals) are carefully chosen to reflect and expand on the themes in Tracy’s poetry. The result is an effective flow, almost a conversation between poem and song….Like all the best poetry, it is impossible to really summarize in a sentence what Tracy is saying in these poems. This expansiveness makes Tracy’s poems the perfect partner to the songs.†– G. Murray Thomas/Poetix
