It is impossible to talk about Karen Nichelle without acknowledging her as a powerful singer, songwriter and most of all, a true worshipper. Skillfully expressing her love for God through song is her heart’s desire and she does it with a stirring passion. Blessed with an angel’s voice, Karen Nichelle continues to breakthrough into God’s presence with love and thanksgiving, leading God’s people to His throne.Always a lover of music and song, Karen Nichelle, a Cincinnati, Ohio native, began singing in the children’s choir at age five and continued her training throughout high school at the School For The Creative and Performing Arts,Pine Forge Academy and later at Oakwood College and Indiana University studying formal classical vocal training for ten years. “As a singer in high school I was highly influenced by Whitney Houston. I always felt like I didn’t measure up to other singers because I didn’t have the traditional, full-size gospel voice. Whitney’s sound made me feel confident that my high, sweet-sounding voice was just as commanding.”Karen Nichelle is thankful for her Christian foundation, musical training and mentorship and knows that all are equally important as style and sound in her music. This key detail has encouraged her to have an expectant heart and looks forward to reaching the masses through her music and song writing.During her classical training years she was a background vocalist for Barry Manilow and Michael Bolton. In 1995, Karen Nichelle sought a career in popular music and began to write songs and prepare to record her demo. The week that she was to record her pop demo, the studio flooded. Months later, Karen Nichelle called the studio to reschedule her demo taping and it had been struck by lightning. For a third time, she called to reschedule and the studio had caught on fire! However, was God truly calling her into the music ministry? She asked for another sign – she told the Lord that if He wanted her to sing for Him, to help her write a song for Him. She put her pen to paper and wrote her first song for God in less than five minutes – God had been waiting on Karen Nichelle to join Him in His presence.Karen Nichelle moved to Nashville in 1999 and began walking in her calling, full-time. “Use Me” is Karen Nichelle’s heart cry, as well as the title of her first song written for and featured on Ann McCrary’s project, released in November of 2002. “God has given me a heart for music. When I sing, I want people to see that God is real.” “Use Me” was also released as a single accompaniment track. God just keeps on blessing.
