Everyday something new is happening in hip-hop, the transformation of the street spawned music genre evolves every minute. But the reality of finding an artist that can combine all of the characteristics to be deemed as “great†is a rarity. The type of artist that have a huge impact, the type that come in and create a buzz or a sound big enough to shine the spot-light on everything that they record. Not an imitation, not a gimmick, not a 1 hit wonder, nothing along those lines ; someone that really respects the sediments of hip-hop and exhibits that inside their craft. Creativity seen as a priority in the mind, originality deemed as a must, and integrity nothing less than mandatory. For people who know and love hip-hop, that’s what they want, that’s what they need. The growing metropolis of Sacramento, California has produced an artist that has been blessed with the gift of possessing the essential traits to be a hip-hop legend. Formerly known as Prophesy, Derrick Burks also known as P.O.J. or Prophy was born in the year of 1982 on May 3rd. He began writing music with his cousin Dominic Ryan also known as Sicc Sentences. The gift of being a great lyricist was sat aside during most of Prophy’s adolescent years as he excelled in athletics gaining the attention of colleges nationwide. Becoming IAAF ranked in the 100 meter dash at Long Beach City College earned him the opportunity of a full scholarship to attend (1) of the following universities: University of Oregon, University of Iowa, University of Nebraska, Seton Hall University, University of South Carolina, or Texas Christian University. The correct choice was made as he attended the University of Iowa, competed through injury, and returned to Sacramento, California with Bachelor Degree in hand. However, during Prophy’s high school senior year would change music from a hobby to a career filled with longevity. He joined forces with his older brother’s best friend, Cornelius “Slo-Burn†Taylor and created a new sound crowned “Infinizmâ€. Infinizm is the combination of two-words we all expect from a musical innovator, rhythm and we want the music to live forever, infinite. During Christmas and summer breaks through out the early 2000s, Prophy and Slo Burn would have recording sessions that would sometimes go to 12 hours as they would blast from Sacramento to record at Laid Black Recording studio in the streets of the infamous Hunters Point/San Francisco. A portion of the material recorded from their sessions were placed on Prophy’s Independent debut-release titled “Now Playinâ€(Baiss Entertainment Group/Big Nest Records) . Prophy also introduced relative Sicc Sentences to Slo-Burn and the trio would form an alliance. However, the 2004 summer release of Prophy’s debut album would be bitter sweet as he lost his mother due to battles with lung cancer approximately (1) month after the album release. He then would take on the challenge of finishing his last year of college without the person who fueled him to become successful. The death of Prophy’s mother equaled the death of Prophesy, and the birth of the Product of Jewell (P.O.J). The Baiss Ent. staff did the best they could at promoting the debut album, in 2005 Prophy received the Indie Tunes Song of The Year Award for the song “Back of the Busâ€. Year later Prophy has not stopped pumping out new innovative music, sublime poetry, along with a persona that the average man can relate. He is currently in the works of releasing several new projects as well as being featured on songs with local and artist from other regions. His next album to be released is expected in late 2009, after his series of “FREE†mixtapes are released. The mixtapes released are rumored to be the works of Prophy and Slo Burn’s catalog, reports are that they have nearly 300 songs recorded. Also look for the P.O.J. to appear with artist such as : St.John , T-Nutty, Gameboy, Sycosis (Chicago), The Cubist (Chicago), Mike Page (Midwest), Hurricane Insane, Jameezy, Tha Gorilla, and production from new age prodigy Ezzy.PUT YOUR BIO SECTION HERE!
