Sackets Harbor, NY

From the shores of Lake Erie to the Atlantic Ocean, in special places as large as New York City and as small as Sackets Harbor, history has been made.
Immediately upon settling the Village in 1801, Augustus Sacket selected land in the center of the village that commanded a sweeping view of the harbor upon which to build his handsome Georgian-style Mansion. International tensions between the United States and Great Britain led to a series of embargoes, starting in 1807, which forbade trade with Great Britain and Canada. These embargoes caused widespread smuggling along the United.States.- Canada border. Sackets Harbor saw its first military troops in 1809 when soldiers were sent here to enforce the embargoes.
The United States declared war on Great Britain on June 18, 1812. Sackets Harbor became the headquarters of the United States Army and Navy for the northern frontier. Thousands of troops and hundreds of ships carpenters poured into the village, transforming it into a major military outpost and shipbuilding center. Two British attacks on Sackets Harbor were repulsed during the war. Military fortifications were strengthened after each attack.
The war ended in 1814 and a post-war boom turned the crude barracks town into a prosperous village. Sackets Harbor developed throughout the 19th century into a commercial lake port, military town and summer resort.
