Les Coulter

With more than 30 years in music, Les Coulter has paid his dues performing on stages throughout the United States and Europe and for the past 15 years composing original music which he calls ‘sound paintings’. His first exposure to music came from church Gospel Music and the jazz greats his father listened to in their home. During his teenage years he developed his guitar technique in the spirit of Jimi Hendrix, Albert King, Robert Johnson and John Mayall. A classically trained musician, he developed his understanding of music theory and composition which is today the basis of all modern music and the foundation of his work.In Los Angeles his study of jazz guitar with the legendary John Collins, taught him ‘jazz standards’, perfected his guitar technique and sight reading ability and prepared him to play with studio musicians such as James Jamerson (bass), John Heard (bass) and Mike Price (trumpet).Les was under contract with MCA Records and the band ‘Brotherhood’ in the late 1970’s. He has shared the stage with trumpeter Mike Price (Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lou Tabackin Big Band) James Bradley Jr., June Pointer, Joe Sample and Stix Hooper. During his Hollywood and Los Angeles club years a member of Barry White’s group heard Les play. When it was learned Les was both a musician and song writer/composer an introduction was made to Barry White. Les wrote music and lyrics for Barry White (B.W.) and was part of the album ‘Change’.For the past 15 years Les has devoted his time to creating the genre of music he calls ‘Sound Paintings’. In Les’ words, ‘Sound Paintings is a music genre using sound design technique and contemporary music styles. This new genre lends itself to cinematic applications; it brings colors and emotional out pouring to film’.Les has just completed the album ‘Les Coulter 2007’ and is finishing work on another album to be released later this year.
