THAT JIVE

About Me

Howard & Dave had played together for years, tearing up Detroit and Chicago, in various bands, during which one year Howard won Metro Times Best Guitarist. Angie, who'd been jamming around for years, as well, in Detroit and Laramie, Wyoming, met Howard when she was working at Desirable Discs and Howard had just moved back from Chicago and was working at Hewitt's Music, nearby. They met at the record store and than ran into each other at a Token Lounge jam night, where she joined Howard and Dave for some blues in '92. They began to form a band around that time, jamming around, went separate onto other projects and than in '95 a coffee house called The Madhatter Cafe opened in Dearborn and they got together as a trio creating songs thru the vibes of the Alice in Wonderland staff & decor. At practice, Angie would ask the guys to play "that one jive" they had done at the gig, and one night Dave said "ha, That Jive", and so it was. That Jive, as a trio recorded "live" at White Room studio, Detroit, with Dave P at the board. Eventually they added one song to the (future)That Jive CD from that session; "Don't Talk Jive", in which, Dave P suggested they record "talking" backwards in the guitar solo background. Had a blast. At some point they added Gary Narezny on bass for a month or two, which didn't work out. Than one night at the Third Street Saloon, Detroit, Bill showed up to jam with them. He had played a few times with Howard and Dave in their band "Saligrowler", in which Angie did back up vocals, as well. Bill was going to Wayne State for a music degree and fit in with the Jive's spontaneous improv jam style, bringing a little jazz from his recent studies to mix with the trio's blues and psychodelic rock edge. That Jive then focused recording with Howards 8 track on the main floor at Club Casa Nova, (friends, Winslow & Patti's building downtown Detroit, which had been named after the club it was in the early 1900's) At that time, Dave also was renting the 2nd floor. Howard founded the Contagious label. The CD was recorded "live" on a magic 104 % night, where they had to turn off the fans to record, (hot), as expressed on the song "Raspberry Jam". Dave P assisted in recording. Three songs were created that very night; Breathe In A Kiss, Give Me Back My Freedom and Reverse the Curse, in which the first take was put on the CD. The CD was mixed at White Room by Dave P & Howard. ( ...to be continued)
