WHAT IS A STREET TEAM?
About 15 years ago Nadine Gelineau founded the first Canadian Street Team, the BMG Street Soldiers. The idea was to raise awareness by sheer unavoidability. Street team members were to poster public space and distribute stickers and flyers. Since then the promotional tasks have included stenciling snow banks in Toronto , to chalking murals at skate parks in New York . Just about anything that could catch the attention of prospective fans was fair game.
Indie Band Street Teams consist of friends and fans of the artist, who are willing to help get their name out there. They do whatever they can to promote & market the artist. As a member of Flatlined’s Street Team, you won’t be assigned any specific task, and will commit as much time as you would like to assisting the band. Tell your friends, e-mail a song request, pimp our your myspace so it contains Flatlined media, organize a fan bus to the next big show, it is all up to you.
WHATS IN IT FOR STREET TEAMERS?
Ultimately you are helping a band you care about, love and want to see suceed.
It can also be seen as an initiation, albeit a menial one into the entertainment & advertising industries. AddVICE Canada’s general manager, Vee Popat thinks Street Team participation is helpful for the job prospectus, saying that grassroots marketing knowledge can only augment conventional marketing smarts. “How hard is it to book ads?†Popat asks. “You make phone calls, you get a media-booker to buy you ads on MuchMusic or Global or however you want to do it. That’s not really hard to do. That doesn’t take the creativity that street teams do. With street teams you learn how to aggressively guerrilla-market a band.†It is that type of experience that will set you apart when looking for entry level jobs in either industry.
