Jugtown Pirates

About Me

On a chilly November evening in 2006, Paul 'Mendlesohn' Girouard (mandolin) and Tobias Sanchez-Mahan (guitar) set sail across the country from Burlington, VT. in a vegetable oil powered school bus (Rusty the Rodeo Whale) with six others, in the original Jugtown Pirates of Lake Champlain. In January 2008, with a tour of 60 shows set up to get them back to the North East starting in Santa Rosa, the rest of the original Pirates went their separate ways, for reasons such as family and school. Still completely devoted to the dream, the two hitch-hiked the California and Arizona shows, canceled the remaining 12 states, and decided to drop their anchor in San Francisco, CA. in hopes of keeping the growing project alive.
As March of 2008 arrived, not even a month after their return, the two Pirates met Zack Brough (upright bass), Josh Brough of Poor Man's Whiskey (banjo), and John Miles of Sunset Promotions and co-owner of Mojito in North Beach (harmonica). With a whimsical plan to jam and a day to spare, the crew found themselves rolling an upright piano into Washington Square Park in the heart of North Beach and, without question, the new Jugtown Pirates had been formed.
From then on, the Jugtown Pirates would meet every week in the park, learn and teach new songs, and perform for growing crowds in the heat of the California's summer sun. They quickly started a weekly residence at Mojito which helped them start a strong fan-base, and before the winter season, created an early week ground shaking Ho-Down. Other venues also opened up their doors, such as Cafe Du Nord, Bottom of the Hill, Starry Plough, The Caspar Inn, and many more.
As the Winter season began, The Pirates filtered themselves down to the core players (Mendlesohn, Toby, and Zack) and perfected their sound into very unique vocal harmonies, high energy, and technical skill. With over 5 hours of material thus far, the Jugtown Pirates have taken their act to the street playing 5-6 days, as well as 2-4 nightly gigs, a week. Because of this, they have been selling over 100 demo CD's a week and have created a great buzz about their presence in the Bay area. Their weekly residence at Mojito has been drawing impressive numbers for a Monday night and their number of gigs/private parties to come has been steadily increasing.
Sharing a night with the Jugtown Pirates as a trio, or even with special guests, is always a treat and full of high energy, dancing, and people coming together forgetting about the stresses in their day to day live. Catch these Scurvy Dogs while you can and become part of a modern tradition; a growing revolutionary culture of acoustic, roots, feel good, throw off your shoes and loosen your knees kind of music. Remember, the first letter of Revolution is...
